  • Value of Production still down for the fourth month

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry continued to tumble as it posted a decrease of 3.9 percent in December 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was brought about by the two-digit decreases observed in the following sectors: fabricated metal products, furniture and fixtures, textiles, machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products and tobacco. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

While VaPI recorded a slow month-on-month growth of 1.0 percent in December 2006. Sectors that made significant contribution to the increase were the following: petroleum products, footwear and wearing apparel, non-metallic mineral products and beverages. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production Index (VoPI) posts whole year round decreases

On a yearly basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) slumped by 9.2 percent in December, which was an improvement from the two-digit drop (revised) of 15.9 percent in November. This was due to decreases in the eight major sectors, namely: fabricated metal products, machinery excluding electrical, textiles, furniture and fixtures, electrical machinery, petroleum products, tobacco and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

VoPI on a monthly comparison managed to grow at 0.5 percent in December. Major sectors attributed to the increase were the following: petroleum products, footwear and wearing apparel and beverages. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

  •
  • Value of Net Sales sustains single-digit growth

Value of Net Sales posted a year-on-year increment of 1.1 percent in December 2006. Leather products with 70.1 percent growth, significantly contributed to the increase, followed by other major sectors that also reported a two-digit increases, namely: tobacco, publishing and printing, basic metals, wood and wood products, rubber products, non-metallic mineral products, food manufacturing and miscellaneous manufactures. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly basis, Value of Net Sales grew by 2.3 percent in December 2006 after registering a (revised) decrease of 2.2 percent in November. Sectors that reported significant expansion in sales value were the following: footwear and wearing apparel, tobacco, beverages, wood and wood products and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales posts negative growth in eleven months

However, Volume of Net Sales on a year-on-year basis slipped by 5.0 percent in December 2006. Machinery excluding electrical was still on its downtrend at 75.2 percent, followed by other major sectors that significantly influenced the reduction in sales volume, namely: fabricated metal products, petroleum products, electrical machinery, textiles, furniture and fixtures and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

Volume of Net Sales on a month-on-month basis recovered by 1.8 percent in December from a previous month's (revised) drop of 1.9 percent, primarily due to the better performance in sales volume of the following sectors: footwear and wearing apparel, tobacco, beverages, wood and wood products and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  •

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in December 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.3 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, paper and paper products, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, leather products, basic metals, rubber products, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6..

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.2 percent in December 2006. More than half or 58.4 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 31.4 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
