  • Value of Production improves further

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry posted a year-on-year growth of 9.6 percent in June 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Sectors that reported significant expansion in production were the following: leather products, basic metals, petroleum products, fabricated metal products, food manufacturing, beverages and textiles. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

Likewise, VaPI on a monthly basis recorded a slow growth of 1.2 percent in June 2006, with fourteen (14) of the 20 major sectors posting increases in production. Major contributors to the increase were beverages and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production Index (VoPI) remains sluggish

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to drop as it posted a decrease of 4.3 percent in June 2006. Major sectors with significant reduction in factory output were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, tobacco, wood and wood products, footwear and wearing apparel, transport equipment and rubber products. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

On a month-on-month basis, VoPI reflected a slight increment of 0.3 percent in June 2006. This was due to the increases posted by the twelve (12) major sectors, led by beverages and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

  • Value of Net Sales increases

On a yearly basis, Value of Net Sales managed to grow by 3.8 percent in June 2006 compared to the previous month's (revised) growth of 7.7 percent. This was due to the two-digit increases reported by five (5) major sectors, which offset the declines in eight (8) major sectors. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

However, Value of Net Sales on a monthly basis slowly stepped down by 0.6 percent in June 2006 from an increase (revised) of 8.7 percent in the previous month. Major sectors that influenced the drop in sales were the following: leather products, beverages and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales continues to step down

Volume of Net Sales continued to tumble as it posted a year-on-year decrease of 8.6 in June 2006. This was brought about by the sluggish performance in sales of the ten (10) major sectors, namely: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, footwear and wearing apparel, transport equipment, beverages, publishing and printing, wood and wood products, tobacco, petroleum products and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a monthly basis, Volume of Net Sales also fell by 1.8 percent in June 2006 compared to the previous month's (revised) increase of 8.0 percent. Sectors that pulled down the sales were the following: leather products, beverages, publishing and printing and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Producer Price Index (PPI) sustains double-digit growth

Producer Price Index (PPI) of manufacturing sector maintained its two-digit growth at 14.5 percent in June 2006. Price increments were reported by sixteen (16) major sectors, with two-digit increases in the following: electrical machinery, footwear and wearing apparel, machinery excluding electrical, leather products, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products, rubber products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Table 5.

Also, PPI posted a monthly increase of 0.9 percent in June 2006. Price increments were observed in sixteen (16) major sectors. Refer to Table 5.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in June 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.3 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, paper and paper products, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, leather products, basic metals, rubber products, food manufacturing, chemical products and textiles. Refer to Table 6..

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 9.7 percent in June 2006. More than half or 59.3 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 31.0 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
