·  Value of Production remains at two-digit growth in April 2010

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing recorded a year-on-year growth of 22.8 percent in April 2010, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was due to the increases in production value observed in 16 major sectors, with two-digit growth registered by the following: transport equipment, petroleum products, electrical machinery, basic metal, miscellaneous manufactures, leather products, wood and wood products, rubber and plastic products, machinery except electrical, non-metallic mineral products, beverages and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On the other hand, VaPI on a month-on-month change, dropped at a slower rate of 1.1 percent in April 2010. Major sectors that significantly contributed to the decline were the following: leather products, wood and wood products, fabricated metal products, paper and paper products, furniture and fixtures, publishing and printing, chemical products, and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production maintains an upward trend in April 2010

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) on an annual basis gained further as it posted an annual increment of 28.7 percent in April 2010. This was brought about by the expanded output performance of 17 major sectors, with two-digit increases noted in the following: transport equipment, electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, miscellaneous manufactures, furniture and fixtures, basic metals, petroleum products, wood and wood products, non-metallic mineral products, leather products, rubber and plastic products, beverages and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a monthly comparison, VoPI slightly grew by 1.6 percent in April 2010. This was due to the two-digit increases in production volume reported by two major sectors, offsetting the two-digit decreases reported by seven major sectors. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

·  Value of Net Sales accelerates in April 2010

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI), on a year-on-year comparison, recorded a two-digit growth of 21.5 percent in April 2010. Significant expansion in sales value were reported by 14 out of 15 major sectors that posted increases, namely: wood and wood products, petroleum products, transport equipment, leather products, basic metals, miscellaneous manufactures, electrical machinery, beverages, non-metallic mineral products, paper and paper products, chemical products, rubber and plastic products, food manufacturing and machinery except electrical. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a month-on-month comparison, however, VaNSI fell by 4.0 percent in April 2010 from its previous month's growth of 9.9 percent. This was due to the decline in sales exhibited by 15 major sectors led by tobacco products, with negative rate of 70.3 percent. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales grows further in April 2010

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) continued to experience a two-digit growth of 27.3 percent in April 2010 compared with the year-ago figure. Among the 16 major sectors that exhibited increases in sales volume, 15 major sectors showed two-digit growth, namely: electrical machinery, furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, wood and wood products, transport equipment, machinery except electrical, basic metals, leather products, non-metallic mineral products, paper and paper products, beverages, fabricated metal products, chemical products, rubber and plastic products and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a monthly basis, VoNSI went down by 1.4 percent in April 2010 compared to a two-digit growth of 10.2 percent a month ago. Five of the 14 major sectors significantly pulled down the sales output of the manufacturing industry, led by tobacco products with 70.3 percent. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in April 2010 for total manufacturing stood at 82.6 percent. Ten major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, chemical products and rubber and plastic products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 14.3 percent in April 2010. About 64.2 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 21.5 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.

The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.

For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

The indices generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.

The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
