  • Value of Production slightly grows in September 2011

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing inched up to 2.9 percent in September 2011, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Fourteen of the 20 major sectors posted increases in production, with two-digit increases registered by the following: furniture and fixtures, petroleum products, rubber and plastic products, tobacco products, chemical products, beverages, leather products, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a monthly basis, VaPI on the other hand declined by one percent (1.0%) in September 2011. Significant reduction in value of production was exhibited for basic metals, with a decrease of 14.4 percent. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production posts positive rate in September 2011

On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) grew at a slower rate of 1.2 percent in September 2011. This was mainly accounted by the three- digit growth in furniture and fixtures, which surged by 171.0 percent. Other major sectors that registered two-digit increases were miscellaneous manufactures, beverages, chemical products, leather products, tobacco products, rubber and plastic products, paper and paper products, fabricated metal products and electrical machinery. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

However, VoPI on a month-on-month basis continued to fall as it registered a decrement of 1.6 percent in September 2011. This was attributed to the slower production output of the basic metals, offsetting the two-digit increases reported by 6 major sectors. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  • Value of Net Sales maintains a two-digit growth in September 2011

On a yearly comparison, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) continued to grow, reflecting a two-digit increment of 11.5 percent in September 2011. The major contributing factor was the expansion in sales of 14 major sectors of manufacturing industry, with two-digit increases observed in the following: petroleum products, tobacco products, rubber and plastic products, miscellaneous manufactures, footwear and wearing apparel, publishing and printing and chemical products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a month-on-month comparison, on the other hand, VaNSI slid 1.8 percent from a slight increment of 1.1 percent in August 2011. This was due to decline in sales value of seven (7) major sectors, offsetting the increases reported by 13 major sectors. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

    • Volume of Net Sales likewise grows at slower pace

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) increased at a slower rate of 9.8 percent compared with the year-ago figure. This was accounted mainly by the slower in sales output of the basic metals industry. However, nine major sectors contributed to the increases in volume of net sales, namely: furniture and fixtures, tobacco products, miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products, rubber and plastic products, footwear and wearing apparel, publishing and printing, chemical products and beverages. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

VoNSI, on a month-on-month change slipped to 2.4 percent in September 2011. Major sectors that showed two-digit decreases in sales volume were basic metals and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in September 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.2 percent. Eleven of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products, paper and paper products, rubber and plastic products, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, machinery except electrical and leather products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 15.3 percent in September 2011. About 61.1 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 23.6 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.

The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.

For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.

The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
