Abaca

- During the period January-March 2017, production of abaca fibers went down by 7.6 percent from 16.18 thousand metric tons last year to 14.95 thousand metric tons. The decrease was caused by the following:
- hills were toppled down due to Typhoon “Nina” in Bicol Region (Catanduanes) which limited the stripping of typhoon-damaged stalks during January only; and
- less stripping activities conducted in Caraga (Surigao del Sur) due to Northeast Monsoon (Amihan).

- Bicol Region was the top abaca producer, contributing 43.3 percent to the country’s total abaca production. Eastern Visayas and Davao Region came in next, with 17.4 percent and 11.7 percent contribution, respectively.
