Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin, January-March 2017

May 2017

Coconut

  • Production of coconut for the quarter was estimated at 3.12 million metric tons, which is 2.3 percent lower than last year’s production of 3.20 million metric tons. This decline was caused by the following:
    • less nuts developed due to the effect of dry spell in Davao Region (Davao del Sur) and drought during the first semester of 2016 in SOCCSKSARGEN (Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato); and

    • several bearing trees were cut down due to cocolisap infestation in ARMM (Basilan).

  • On the other hand, notable increase in production was recorded in Zamboanga Peninsula (Zamboanga del Norte) as more were harvested due to higher price of copra.

  • The top four (4) coconut-producing regions for the quarter are Davao Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and ARMM. These Mindanao regions had a collective production of 1.61 million metric tons, equivalent to 51.6 percent of the national coconut production.
