Reference Number: 2002-147
Release Date: 17 September 2002

Population growth rate declined to 1.63 percent

The population of Cagayan de Oro City, as of May 1, 2000 was 461,877 persons. This was up by 33,563 persons as compared to the 1995 figure. However, the annual population growth rate from 1995 to 2000 declined to 1.63 percent, from 4.44 percent in the 1990 to 1995 census result.

The number of households rose to 93,525, higher by 9,440 households from five years ago. The average household size was 4.92 persons slightly lower than in 1995 (5.07 persons) but slightly higher than the national average of five persons.

Cagayan de Oro City ranked fourth in Northern Mindanao

Cagayan de Oro City ranked fourth among the four provinces and one highly urbanized city (Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City) in Northern Mindanao. It contributed 16.81 percent to the 2.7 million population in the region. At the national level, the city shared 0.60 percent to the total population of 76.5 million as recorded in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing.

Barangay Carmen was the largest in terms of population size

Among the 80 barangays comprising Cagayan de Oro City, Carmen contributed the biggest proportion (10.22 percent) to the total population of the city. Lapasan and Kauswagan followed with 7.57 and 6.23 percent, respectively. Barangay 5 (Poblacion) and Barangay 39 (Poblacion) were the smallest barangays, both sharing 0.01 percent each.

Cagayan de Oro City had a median age of 21 years

Cagayan de Oro City had a median age of 21 years, slightly higher than the 1995 median age of 20 years. This meant that in 2000, half of the population were below 21 years old.

Sex ratio was recorded at 97.93

There were 228.5 thousand males and 233.4 thousand females in Cagayan de Oro City. This gave a sex ratio of 97.93 males for every 100 females in 2000, slightly higher than the 1995 figure of 97.82.

More males were in the age groups 0 to14 years and 45 to 59 years, while more females were in the age groups 15 to 44 and 60 years and over.

Dependency ratio was 60

The percentage of the total population belonging to the age group 0 to 14 years was 34.91 percent. The oldest group (65 year and over) accounted for 2.74 percent of the total city population while 62.35 percent belonged to the economically active population (aged 15 to 64 years).

Thus, the overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 60.38. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 60 dependents (56 persons aged 0 to 14 years - young dependents; and 4 persons aged 65 years and over - old dependents). The 2000 ratio was lower by 3.46 percentage points as compared to the 1995 figure (63.84).

Voting population comprised more than half of the total population

There were 270,147 persons or 58.49 percent of the total population belonging to the voting population (aged 18 years and over), higher by 2.47 percentage points from the 1995 figure.

Majority of the females were in the childbearing ages

More than half (56.12 percent) of the total female population belonged to the childbearing age group (15 to 49 years). This was almost the same as that of the 1995 figure (56.15 percent).

More females reached higher level of education

Of the total household population five years old and over, 28.99 percent completed or attended elementary education; 31.99 percent, high school; and 9.03 percent reached higher level of education.

Males dominated the elementary (50.80 percent) and post secondary levels (50.79 percent). More females had reached high school (51.69 percent), had studied college (51.05 percent), had academic degrees (54.95 percent), and had post baccalaureate degrees (54.19 percent).

Two out of five were Binisaya/Bisaya

About 44 percent of the household population in Cagayan de Oro City classified themselves as Binisaya/Bisaya, 22.15 percent as Cebuano, 4.38 percent as Boholano, while 28.07 percent as other ethnic groups.

Widowed were mostly females

About 45.35 percent of the total population 10 years old and over were single, while 44.75 percent were married. The remaining 9.90 percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, with other arrangements or with unknown marital status.

There was an almost equal proportion of single men and women (50.21 percent and 49.79 percent, respectively). The proportion of widowed females was noticeably higher (77.17 percent) than males (22.83 percent).

Single houses were most preferred

Majority (97.1 percent) of the occupied housing units were single houses. Almost two out of three occupied housing units needed no repair or if needed one, with minor repair only. Two out of five occupied housing units were relatively new (built from 1996 to 2000).

Four in five of the occupied housing units had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum

As to the construction materials used for housing units, 82.81 percent of the occupied housing units had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum while 37.62 percent used wood for the outer walls.

About 32 percent of the occupied housing units had a combination of roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum and walls made of concrete/brick/stone, higher by 16.53 percentage points from the 1990 figure (15.54 percent).

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No.591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.

Being a highly urbanized city, Cagayan de Oro City was excluded in the population counts of Misamis Oriental province. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by the NSO.
