Ilocos Norte Posted A Population Of More Than Half A Million (Results from the 2007 Census of Population)

Number of households increased by 11.7 percent

Ilocos Norte had a total population of 547,284 persons as of August 1, 2007, which is larger by 6.4 percent compared to the census count of 514,241 persons as of May 1, 2000. This increase translated to an annual population growth rate of 0.86 percent for the period 2000 to 2007.

The household population of Ilocos Norte in 2007 was 546,133 persons, an increase of 6.4 percent from 513,314 persons in 2000. The number of households, meanwhile, increased by 11.7 percent from 106,939 in 2000 to 119,402 in 2007. The average household size in 2007 was 4.6 persons, lower than the average household size of 4.8 persons in 2000.

Laoag City remained on top in terms of population size

Among the two cities and 21 municipalities of Ilocos Norte, Laoag City, which is the provincial capital, had the biggest population size in 2007, comprising 18.7 percent of the total population of the province. This was followed by the City of Batac (9.3 percent) and the municipality of Dingras (6.5 percent). These were also the top three cities/municipality in 2000 in terms of population size. The municipality of Carasi (0.3 percent) remained at the bottom in 2007.


Males outnumbered females

Of the total household population, 50.4 percent were males while 49.6 percent were females. This resulted to a sex ratio of 101 males for every 100 females, higher than the sex ratio recorded in 2000 (100 males for every 100 females).

Median age increased to 25 years

In 2007, the median age of the household population of the province was 25 years, which means that half of the household population were below 25 years old. This is higher when compared to median age of 24 years in 2000.

Persons aged 0 to 14 years comprised 30.3 percent of the household population. Children aged 5 to 9 years comprised the largest age group, posting 10.2 percent of the total household population, followed by age groups 0 to 4 years (10.1 percent) and 10 to 14 years (9.9 percent).


More females than males were observed in age groups 50 years old and over, while more males than females were observed in the younger age groups (49 years and below).

About 64 percent were of voting age

The size of the voting-age population (18 years old and over) of Ilocos Norte in 2007 was 348,717 persons accounting for about 64 percent of the total household population. The voting-age population recorded in 2000 was 317,930 or 61.9 percent of the total household population. Females (50.5 percent) outnumbered males (49.5 percent) in the total voting-age population in 2007.

Dependents decreased to 60 persons per 100 persons in the working-age population

More than three-fifths (62.6 percent) of the total household population belonged to the working-age population (15 to 64 years). The young dependents (under 15 years) comprised 30.3 percent and the old dependents (65 years and over), 7.2 percent.

The overall dependency ratio of Ilocos Norte in 2007 was 59.8, down from 62.8 in 2000. This means that for every 100 persons in the working-age population in 2007, there were 60 dependents (48 young and 12 old dependents).

More males among never-married persons

Of the household population 10 years old and over, 41.1 percent were never-married while 46.8 percent were married. The proportion of never-married persons in 2007 was lower than the corresponding proportion of 43.9 percent in 2000. Moreover, the proportion of persons with common law/live-in marital arragement increased from 3.9 percent in 2000 to 5.1 percent in 2007.

A higher proportion of males (54.5 percent) among never-married persons was observed in 2007. Meanwhile, the proportion of females was higher among married (50.3 percent), widowed (78.0 percent), divorced/separated (59.4 percent), and those persons with common law/live-in marital arrangement (51.3 percent).

More female academic-degree holders than males

Almost the same percentage of the household population 5 years old and over had attended or completed elementary education (34.3 percent) and had reached or finished high school (34.0 percent). About 9 percent were college undergraduates and 5.6 percent were academic-degree holders.

Meanwhile, there were more female academic-degree holders (57.6 percent) than males (42.4 percent). Similarly, among those with post baccalaureate courses, there were more females (59.8 percent) than males (40.2 percent).

About 66 percent attended school

Nearly two out of three persons (65.6 percent) in the household population 5 to 24 years old attended school during School Year 2007 to 2008. School attendance was higher among males (50.6 percent) than among females (49.4 percent) during the said school year.

Occupied housing units increased by 12.8 percent

In 2007, there were 115,352 occupied housing units in Ilocos Norte. This is 12.8 percent higher than the number of occupied housing units recorded in 2000. A ratio of 104 households per 100 occupied housing units was recorded in 2007. This ratio is lower than the recorded ratio of 105 households per 100 occupied housing units in 2000. Moreover, the number of persons per occupied housing unit was 4.7 persons in 2007, lower than the ratio of 5.0 persons per occupied housing unit in 2000.

Majority of the occupied housing units had outer walls made of concrete/brick/stone and roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum

Among the 115,352 occupied housing units in Ilocos Norte, 63.7 percent had outer walls made of concrete/brick/stone. As to the construction materials of the roof, 91.0 percent had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum. These construction materials were also the most commonly used materials for outer walls and roofs in 2000.
