Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index in the National Capital Region

The annual change of the Construction Materials Wholesale PriceIndex (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) further moved upward by 6.3 percent in February 2018. Its annual rate in January 2018 was recorded at 5.7 percent and in February 2017, 4.0 percent. The indices of eleven out of the 17 commodity groups posted higher annual mark-ups during the month. Meanwhile, slower annual increases were registered in the indices of sand and gravel at 2.0 percent and doors, jambs, and steel casement, 2.1 percent. A negative annual rate was still posted in cement index at -3.2 percent. Other commodity groups either retained their previous month’s rate or had zero growth (see Table 2).
The month-on-month increase of the CMWPI in NCR decelerated to 0.8 percent in February 2018. Its rate in the previous month was registered at 1.8 percent. The index of cement went down by 0.1 percent. In addition, slower monthly increments were noted in the indices of the following commodity groups:
- Sand and Gravel (0.1%);
- Concrete Products (0.3%);
- Hardware (0.2%);
- G.I. Sheet (0.7%);
- Structural Steel (0.5%);
- Tileworks (0.1%);
- Electrical Works (0.8%);
- Painting Works (0.2%); and
- Fuels and Lubricants (2.6%).
Meanwhile, from a zero growth in the previous month, the PVC pipes index inched up by 0.1 percent. Likewise, the index of doors, jambs, and steel casement went up by 0.1 percent after it had a 0.1 percent drop in the previous month. The rest of the commodity groups posted either higher mark-ups or had zero growth (see Table 3).
Price hikes were observed in petroleum products, sand, hollow blocks, selected hardware products, plywood, lumber, G.I sheets, reinforcing and structural steel, vinyl tile, PVC door, selected electrical works, plumbing fixtures and accessories, paints and PVC pipes during the period. On the other hand,the price of cement went down during the month.
