General Retail Price Index in the National Capital Region (2000=100) : December 2010

Release Date:

December 2010

  • Month-on-Month

The month-on-month growth rate of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) moved up at a slower pace of 0.3 percent in December from 0.9 percent in November. The monthly price movement in the heavily weighted food index slowed to 0.1 percent in December from 2.3 percent in November. No price movements were seen in crude materials, inedible except fuels and miscellaneous manufactured articles indexes as they registered zero growth while price increases in beverages and tobacco and chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats indexes remained at 0.1 percent. Meanwhile, the rest of the commodity groups posted higher price gains.

Downward price adjustments were observed in fruits and vegetables due to ample supply and continued flowing-in of locally grown fruits in the markets. On the other hand, price hikes were observed in sugar, cooking oil, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, steel bars and electrical wires and wiring devices.

  • Year-on-Year

The same rate of 2.7 percent was still observed in the annual growth rate of the GRPI in NCR. Except for food and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials indexes whose annual price gains were higher at 3.6 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively from their last month's corresponding rates of 3.1 percent and 2.1 percent, all the other commodity groups either posted slower or previous month's annual growth rates. The annual price movement in the beverages and tobacco index slowed to 1.2 percent in December from 1.3 percent in November; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 8.2 percent from 9.6 percent; machinery and transport equipment, 2.1 percent from 2.5 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 1.4 percent from 1.9 percent. The crude materials, inedible except fuels and chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats indexes retained their previous month's rates of 1.7 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively.
