Year-on-Year

  •           The year-on-year growth of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) picked up 1.6 percent in April 2016. Last month, it was recorded at 1.1 percent and in April 2015, 1.8 percent. The uptrend was mainly due to the 4.1 percent annual growth registered in the heavily-weighted food index. Higher annual gains were also observed in the indices of beverages and tobacco at 1.0 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 1.3 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 0.9 percent. Moreover, the index for manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials recorded a positive annual growth of 0.4 percent in April 2016 from a 0.1 percent annual decrease last month.

On the contrary, slowdowns in the annual increments were posted in the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels at 0.5 percent and machinery and transport equipment, 0.7 percent. The index for mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials exhibited an annual decline of 9.5 percent during the month (Table 2).

 Month-on-Month

On a monthly basis, the GRPI in NCR inched up by 0.5 percent in April 2016. Last month, it posted a 0.4 percent growth.

  • Food index rose by 1.0 percent during the month. This was brought about by higher prices of fresh and canned meat, dairy products, processed fish, fresh fruits, vegetables and cooking oil.

  • The index for beverages and tobacco gained by 0.3 percent due to upward price adjustments in selected liquors.

  • Price increases in petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene and LPG raised the index for mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by 1.5 percent. This was however, slower compared to 2.4 percent growth recorded in March 2016.

  • The index for chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats moved up by 0.4 percent during the month. Price mark ups were noted in selected paints, medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations, cosmetics and toilet preparations.

  • Manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index went up by 0.3 percent. Plywood, veneer, cement and steel bars were priced higher during the period.

  • Prices of electrical lamps and fixtures were higher in April 2016. Thus, machinery and transport equipment index went up by 0.1 percent.

  • The index for miscellaneous manufactured articles index increased by 0.1 percent. This was brought about by the increments in the prices of sanitary fixtures and selected ready-made garments.

  • No movement was however, noted in the index of crude materials, inedible except fuel as it registered a flat growth during the month.
