Updates on July-September 2021 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 September 2021

HIGHLIGHTS

The updated July to September 2021 production on palay based on standing crop as of 01 September 2021 may be higher than the July to September 2020. On the other hand, the probable corn output may be lower than the July to September 2020.

PALAY

1. The estimated palay production for July to September 2021 may increase to 3.71 million metric tons or by 5.8 percent based on standing crop as of 01 September 2021, from its estimate of 3.51 million metric tons in the period July to September 2020. The updated estimate of palay production for the period of July to September 2021 as of 01 September 2021 was lower by -2.3 percent from its estimate of 3.80 million metric tons as of 01 July 2021. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. The estimated harvest area for the period of July to September 2021 may increase by 7.1 percent, from 849.40 thousand hectares in the same period of 2020. Yield per hectare may decrease to 4.08 metric tons, from 4.13 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 382.19 thousand hectares or 42.0 percent of the updated standing crop have been harvested. (Tables 1 and 2)

4. As for the farmer’s planting intentions for July to September 2021, 1,392.46 thousand hectares or 79.5 percent of the perceived area have been actually planted. (Table 3)

5. Of the total area of 1,919.93 thousand hectares of standing crop for October to December 2021 harvest, 33.8 percent were at the vegetative stage, 43.7 percent at the reproductive stage, and 22.5 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. Based on standing crop as of 01 September 2021, the updated corn production for the period of July to September 2021 may decrease to 2.36 million metric tons or by -16.3 percent, from its estimate of 2.82 million metric tons in the same period of 2020. The updated estimate of corn production for the period July to September 2021 as of 01 September 2021 is lower by -2.1 percent from its estimate of 2.41 million metric tons as of 01 July 2021. (Table 5 and Figure 3)

2. Harvest area for the period of July to September 2021 may decrease to 821.85 thousand hectares, from 917.27 thousand hectares in the same period of 2020. Yield per hectare may decrease to 2.87 metric tons, from the 3.07 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 452.39 thousand hectares or 55.0 percent of the updated standing crop have been harvested. (Tables 5 and 6)

4. Around 404.56 thousand hectares or 61.1 percent of the planting intentions for October to December 2021 crop have been realized. (Table 7)

5. Of the total area for standing corn, which is to be harvested for October to December 2021, 33.9 percent were at the vegetative stage, 28.0 percent at the reproductive stage, and 38.1 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure 4)
