2018 Census of Philippine Business and Industry: Education
The industry section on education (Section P) includes six industry group covering the activities of education at any level or for any profession, oral or written, as well as by radio and television or other means of communication. It includes education by different institutions in the regular school system at different levels, as well as adult education, literacy programs, etc. Military schools and academies, prison schools etc. at their respective levels are also included, as well as instructions primarily concerned with sports and recreational activities and education support activities.
The 2018 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) covers only the establishments engaged in private education services.
The 2018 CPBI results for private education servicesare presented in Figure 1. The figure shows the number of establishments engaged in private education services, total revenue generated, total expenses incurred, total employment created, total value added generated, total employment per establishments, and revenue per expense with corresponding data and percentage share. It also shows the comparison from the 2012 census results.
Secondary/High school education industry group led in terms of the number of establishments
In 2018, a total of 14,576 establishments were engaged in private education. Establishments engaged in secondary/high school education led in terms of the number of establishments with 3,409 (23.4%), followed by primary/ elementary education 3,125 (21.4%). On the other hand, educational support services recorded the lowest count with 38 establishments (0.3%). (Table 1, Table 1A, and Figure 2)
National Capital Region (NCR) led in terms of the number of establishments
Among the regions, NCR had the highest number of establishments with 2,179 (14.9%), followed by CALABARZON with 1,940 (13.3%), and Central Luzon with 1,540 (10.6%). Meanwhile, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) had the least with 249 or 1.7 percent of the total number of establishments. (Table 3, and Table 3A)
Higher education employed the highest number of employees
Establishments engaged in private education generated a total employment of 412,077 in 2018. Higher education industry group employs the highest number of workers with 186,373 (45.2%) employees, followed by secondary/high school education with total of 110,142 (26.7%) employees, while primary/elementary education ranked third with a total of 50,902 (12.4%) employees. (Table 1, Table 1A, and Figure 3)
NCR led in employment generation
Across regions, NCR recorded the highest employment with 99,272 (24.1%), followed by CALABARZON with 63,574 (15.4%), and Central Luzon with 43,172 (10.5%) employees.
In addition, NCR also hired the highest number of workers under sub-contract agreement or manpower agencies with a total of 5,909 or 38.7 percent of the total for the section. This was followed by CALBARZON with 2,518 (16.5%), and Davao Region with 1,473 (9.7%) sub-contracted employment.
The least number of workers was recorded in ARMM with 5,352 or only 1.3 percent of the total for the section. (Table 3, and Table 3A)
Across industries, higher education led the other industry groups in terms of the number of workers hired under sub-contract agreement with 9,488 (62.2%) sub-contracted employment. (Table 1)
Higher education posted the highest average annual compensation
The average annual compensation in private education industry was recorded at PhP 234.3 thousand.
Higher Education services industry group had highest average annual compensation with PhP 292.8 thousand per worker, followed by educational support services industry group with PhP 249.8 thousand per worker. Meanwhile, the pre-primary/pre-school education industry group had the least with PhP 138.8 thousand per worker. (Table 1, and Figure 4)
Higher education was the top earning industry group
The total revenue generated by private education section reached PhP 222.2 billion in 2018, 37.8 percent higher compared to the 2012 CPBI figure. (Table A)
Higher education was the top earning industry group which generated revenue of PhP 127.8 billion or 57.5 percent of the total for the section. Ranked second was secondary/high school education with PhP 49.0 billion (22.1%). Meanwhile, educational support services generated the lowest revenue with PhP 641.7 million (0.3%).
Higher education industry group also incurred the highest expense with PhP 109.2 billion or 57.5 percent of the total, while the secondary/high school education industry group ranked second with PhP 42.6 billion or 22.5 percent of the total for the section. (Table 1, Table 1A, and Figure 5)
NCR contributed the biggest revenue
Among the regions, NCR had the biggest contribution in terms of revenue with 40.0 percent share to the total (PhP 88.9 billion), followed far behind was CALABARZON and Central Visayas with PhP 31.7 billion (14.3%) and PhP 21.4 billion (9.6%), respectively. On the other hand, ARMM had the lowest generated revenue with PhP 0.6 billion (0.3%). (Table 3A)
NCR incurred highest total expense
Private education establishments in NCR had the biggest share to the total expense amounting to PhP 76.5 billion (40.3%). CALABARZON with PhP 27.6 billion, and Central Visayas with PhP 17.7 billion had 14.5 percent, and 9.3 percent shares, respectively. Meanwhile, education establishments in ARMM had the lowest total expense of PhP 0.6 billion or 0.3 percent of the total for the section. (Table 3A)
Establishments engaged in education earned 17 centavos for every peso cost
The computed revenue per peso expense ratio for the private education section in 2018 was 1.17. Among industry groups, other education services recorded the highest revenue per expense ratio at 1.22, while educational support services registered the lowest at 1.09. (Table 2)
Higher education reached PhP 86.3 billion in value added
Value added for private education was estimated at PhP 149.1 billion. Higher education contributed the highest in terms of value added among the industry groups with PhP 86.0 billion (57.7%) while educational support services reported the lowest with PhP 0.3 billion (0.2%). (Table 1A)
Higher education industry group with 57.7 percent (PhP 86.0 billion) had the majority share of the total value added for the section amounting to PhP 149.1 billion. (Table 1)
Among regions, NCR contributed the highest value added with PhP 57.1 billion (38.3%), followed by CALABARZON which generated PhP 21.4 billion (14.4%), and Central Visayas with PhP 14.1 billion (9.4%). (Table 3A)
