Number of Establishments

Based on the final results of the 2009 Survey of Tourism Establishments in the Philippines (STEP), the total number of establishments engaged in Health and Wellness was estimated to be 3,797. Private medical activities accounted for the biggest number of establishments with 2,240 or 59.0 percent of the total. This was followed by Private hospitals, sanitaria and other similar activities with 858 establishments or 22.6 percent. Establishments engaged in Slendering and body building activities recorded the least number of establishments with 205 (5.4%) Figure 1 displays the distribution of establishments by industry sub-class.
Employment

More than half of the employment employed by Health and Wellness establishments were female workers with 74,299 or 67.7 percent while the remaining 35,410 or 32.3 percent were male. In terms of nationality, almost 100 percent or 109,671 of the employees were Filipino.

Across industries, Private hospitals, sanitaria and other similar activities employed the biggest number of workers with 83,451 or 76.1 percent, followed by Private medical activities with 18,163 or 16.6 percent. Sauna and steam bath activities accounted for 6,438 or 5.9 percent of total employment.
Revenue

Total revenue generated by hospital and wellness establishments amounted to PhP62.8 billion. Hospital and other similar activities earned the highest with PhP52.1 or 82.9 percent. Of the total revenue, PhP2.8 billion or 4.5 percent was generated from tourists. Presented in figure 5 is the distribution of revenue and revenue generated from tourists by health and wellness establishments.
Available Facilities

Two out of ten hospitals had electronic payment facility, one out of ten had restaurant, transport facilities, spa/massage therapy, wireless internet connection and individual computer units. However, four out of ten hospitals reported no available facilities. See Figure 2 (next page) for distribution of the available facilities for health and wellness.

Type of Rooms/Units for Hospitals and Nursing Homes

For the type of rooms and units available for hospitals and nursing homes, standard private rooms had the highest share with 12,913 or 40.0 percent followed by ward rooms and semi-private rooms with 9,758 or 30.3 percent and 4,423 or 13.7 respectively. See Figure 3 for the distribution of rooms and units available for hospital and nursing homes.
Bed Capacity

Majority of the establishments, 2,511 or 81.1 percent, involved in Hospitals and nursing homes had a bed capacity of below 20. Establishments with bed capacity of 331 or 10.7 percent followed while only 34 or 1.1 percent had a bed capacity of 200 and over.
Clients/Patients of Spa and Ambulatory Surgical Clinics

Establishments engaged in Spa services had served a total of 524,578 clients while Ambulatory surgical clinic had treated 1,653,173 patients.
Bed Occupancy Rate

Bed occupancy rate is defined as the ratio of the number of occupied beds to the number of available beds. The concentration of bed occupancy rate for private hospitals, sanitaria and other similar activities was 71-80 followed by 91-100 percent. The least bed occupancy rate for private hospitals, sanitaria and other similar activities was 1-10 percent.
Medical Services Offered by Hospitals and Ambulatory Surgical Clinics

For medical services offered by hospitals and ambulatory surgical clinics, three out of ten responding establishments had internal medicine, one of every four had obstetrics gynecology, two out of ten had pediatric, general surgery and dermatology, one out ten had specialized surgery, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, plastic/reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation and physical medicine. Distribution of medical services offered are shown below.
Types of Massage Offered by Spa and Other Wellness/Fitness Establishment

For types of massage offered by Spa and other wellness/fitness, the most common is shiatsu with six out of ten responding establishments, four out of ten had swedish, two out ten offered thai and aromatherapy.
Plans for Expansion within the Next Five Years

For health and wellness establishments, only 609 or 16.0 percent have plans to expand within the next five years.
Plans for Renovation within the Next Five Years

Around 869 or 22.9 percent health and wellness establishments have plans to renovate within the next five years.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Introduction
The National Statistics Office (NSO) conducted the first-ever 2009 Survey of Tourism Establishments in the Philippines (STEP). This survey collected information on the available supply of tourism goods, products and services which are valuable inputs in the compilation of the Philippine Tourism Satellite Account (PTSA). This is a nationwide survey of establishments in the formal sector engaged in tourism characteristic industries only as defined by Philippine Tourism Statistical Classification System (PTSCS). Tourism characteristic products are goods and services which would cease to exist in meaningful quantity or those for which the level of consumption would be significantly reduced in the absence of visitors (e.g. accommodation services). Activities from which the products were created are termed as tourism characteristic industries..
Scope and coverage
The 2009 STEP is a nationwide survey of establishments in the formal sector engaged in tourism characteristic industries only, as well as, health and wellness industries. Identified industries for health and wellness are included due to the increasing demand for statistics on these activities.

Response rate
A total of 503 or 86.4 percent responded out of the 582 sample establishments drawn for the sector. These include receipts of "good" questionnaires, partially accomplished questionnaires, and reports of closed, moved out or out of scope establishments.
Concepts and Definition of Terms
Ambulatory clinic an institution primarily organized to provide elective surgical treatment of out-patients whose recovery, under normal and routine circumstances, will not require in-patient care.
Aromatherapy a type of complementary and alternative medicine that uses rubbing and kneading of the skin with plant oils that give-off strong, pleasant aromas (smells) in an attempt to promote relaxation, a sense of well-being, and healing. There is no evidence of any long term results other than the pleasure achieved from a pleasant-smelling massage.
Beauty/Barber shop an establishment dealing with cosmetic treatments for men and women. Other variations of this type of business include hair salons and spas. There is a distinction between a beauty salon and a hair salon and although many small businesses do offer both sets of treatments; beauty salon provided more generalized services related to skin health, facial aesthetic, foot care, aromatherapy, - even meditation, oxygen therapy, mud baths and innumerable other services.
Body Pack and Wrap involves reviving of skin through the method of body pack using different methods such as mud body pack and wrap.
Body Toning/Contouring a general term that refers to any surgical procedure that alters different areas of the body, whether it is in a massive weight loss patient or not. Body contouring after massive weight loss refers to a series of procedures that eliminate and/or reduce excess skin and fat that remains after obese individuals lose a significant amount of weight, in a variety of place including the torso, upper arms, chest and thighs.
Dental Clinic an establishment that evaluates, diagnose, prevents and treats diseases, disorders and conditions of the soft and hard tissues of the jaw (mandible), oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures.
Dermatology an establishment that treats skin and its diseases.
Expoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin's outermost surface, and to help maintain the skin. Expoliation is involved in the process of a facial and during body treatments at spas. Expoliation can be achieved through mechanical or chemical means.
Economic activity or business is the activity of the establishment as classified under the amended 1994 Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC). Generally, the main activity of the establishment is the establishment's principal source of income. If the establishment is engaged in several activities, its main activity is that which earns the biggest income or revenue.
Employment is the number of persons who worked in or for this establishment as of November 15, 2005. The concept of employment as of the payroll November 15 was adopted for the first time in the 2002 ASPBI (reference year 2001).
Face care maintenance of the face and its features such as the skin, lips and eyelashes so that it has an attractive and youthful appearance.
Hospital an establishment for health care providing patient treatment by specialized staff and equipment and often but not always providing for longer-term patient confinement.
Laboratory clinic an examination room in a hospital or clinic with diagnostic imaging equipment used to support the catheterization procedure.
Nursing home an establishment that provides living quarters and care for the elderly or the chronically ill.
Ophthalmology clinic an establishment where eyes of patients are examined including its anatomy, physiology and pathology.
Optometry clinic an establishment where optometrist evaluate visual abilities, visual acuity and provision of necessary treatment by the use of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Pharmacy an establishment supervised by a licensed pharmacist where prescription drugs are sold.
Revenue is the value of goods, products/by-products sold and/or services rendered to others whether paid in cash or is considered receivable by the establishment. Valuation of products/by products sold should be in producer's price (ex-establishment), net of discounts and allowances, including duties and charges but excluding subsidies. It also include goods transferred and/or services rendered to other establishment belonging to the same enterprise as the said establishment which should be treated as sales or as if sold to a customer; and revenue from products on a contractual basis from materials supplied by the establishment.
Slimming salon an establishment offering a variety of non-surgical beauty treatments, including hair removal, slimming treatments and facial care.
Spa an establishment that has a holistic approach to health and wellness, rest and relaxation that aims to treat the body, mind and spirit by integrating a range of of professionally administered health, wellness, fitness and beauty, water treatment and services.
Tourism refers to activities of foreign and domestic visitors traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one continuous year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to employment with pay from within the place visited. Travelling for the purpose of conducting business, for education and training, etc. can also be part of tourism. Both foreign visitors (country of residence is other than the Philippines) and domestic visitors (Philippine residents are covered in the survey.
Tourism activities encompass all that foreign and domestic visitors do for a trip or while on a trip. It is not restricted to what could be considered as "typical" tourism activities such as sightseeing, sunbathing, visiting site, etc. From an economic point of view, the basic activity of foreign and domestic visitors is consumption, that is the acquisition of consumption goods and services to satisfy individual or collective needs and wants.

Activities from which the products were created are termed as tourism characteristic industries.
