City of Cagayan de Oro Registers Largest Share of 27.1 Percent in the Economy of Northern Mindanao from 2018 to 2020

13 December 2021 – Cagayan de Oro City. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) released for the first time the Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) of Northern Mindanao for years 2018 to 2020. The release covered five provinces and two highly urbanized cities (HUCs), namely: Province of Bukidnon, Province of Camiguin, Province of Lanao del Norte, Province of Misamis Occidental, Province of Misamis Oriental, City of Iligan, and City of Cagayan de Oro.

The results showed that for the period 2018 to 2020, the City of Cagayan de Oro registered the largest average share of 27.1 percent, with around 226.84 billion pesos of the 837.04 billion pesos regional economy of Northern Mindanao. This was followed by the Province of Bukidnon and Province of Misamis Oriental with average shares of 26.2 percent and 17.6 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, the Province of Misamis Occidental recorded an average share of 13.1 percent. The City of Iligan had an average share of 7.8 percent, while the Province of Lanao del Norte’s average share was recorded at 6.9 percent. The Province of Camiguin logged the least average share for the period with 1.2 percent. (Figure 1 and Table 1).

Northern Mindanao, along with MIMAROPA Region and Central Visayas, was selected as one of the pilot regions for the compilation of PPA starting 2021. The results covering the period 2018 to 2020 are consistent with the annual regional accounts released on 29 April 2021.
