Explanatory Note Data on deaths presented in this press release were obtained from the timely and late registered deaths at the Office of the City/Municipal Registrars throughout the country and submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Provincial Statistical Offices (PSOs) for encoding. Information presented includes the deaths that occurred from January 2020 until March 2021 (cut-off date is as of 16 July 2021 on the submission of encoded data files to the PSA-Central Office from POs). Figures presented herein are still preliminary and may differ in the final counts. Deaths of Filipinos abroad are not yet included in the data, only those who died in the country but whose usual residence is abroad. |
More deaths were registered during the first quarter of 2021 than in 2020
The preliminary number of registered deaths from January to March 2021 reached 170,467, higher by 16.9 percent than the total registered deaths of 145,773 in the same period in 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, all months posted year-on-year increases in the registered deaths—January with an increase of 3,634 (6.8%), February with 6,374 (13.8%), and March with 14,686 (31.9%). Deaths in the National Capital Region (NCR)
Most cities in NCR had more registered deaths in the first quarter of 2021 than in the same period in 2020
NCR registered 21,516 deaths from January to March 2021, or a 12.4 percent increase from the 19,150 deaths registered in the same period in 2020. Year-on-year increases were recorded in 12 out of 17 of its cities/municipalities. Pateros had the highest increase of 30.4 percent, closely followed by the City of Pasig at 29.7 percent.
Meanwhile, declines in the registered deaths during the period were recorded in the City of Muntinlupa (-17.7%), City of Las Piñas (-8.4%), City of Parañaque (-6.2%), and City of Manila (-2.4%). (Figure 2 and Table 3)

The same cities registered the most deaths in the first quarters of 2020 and 2021
Quezon City recorded the highest number of registered deaths in the NCR during the first quarter of 2021 at 4,908 or 22.8 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. The city similarly had the highest share during the same period in 2020, with 3,994 or 20.9 percent of the total deaths. Meanwhile, the City of Manila recorded the second highest with 2,911 registered deaths (13.5%) while the City of Caloocan came in third with 2,778 (12.9%) of the total registered deaths in NCR, maintaining their respective ranks in 2020. These three cities comprised nearly half of the total registered deaths in NCR in 2020 (48.5%) and 2021 (49.3%).
On the other hand, Pateros still had the lowest number of deaths registered in NCR with 102 deaths or 0.5 percent and 133 deaths or 0.6 percent in the first quarters of 2020 and 2021, respectively. (Table 3)
