Description of LFS
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) announces the conduct of the monthly Labor Force Survey (LFS) in between the regular quarterly LFS starting February 2021. The monthly LFS will have a sample of around 11,000 households, which is deemed sufficient to provide national level labor market statistics such as labor force participation, employment, unemployment, and underemployment. Data enumeration for the February 2021 round of the LFS commenced on 08 February 2021, and will end on 24 February 2021. The schedule of data collection will be on the same dates for the months of March, May, June, August, September, November and December 2021.
The number of persons who were in the labor force was at 45.9 million of the estimated 74.1 million population 15 years old and over in July 2020. This translates to a labor force participation rate (LFPR) of 61.9 percent, which means that 619 in 1000 of the population aged 15 years and over were either employed or unemployed. Northern Mindanao and had the highest LFPR with 68.8 percent, followed by Caraga with 68.6 percent. Central Visayas had the lowest LFPR with 57.7 percent. (Tables 1 and 3, and Figure 1)
The country’s unemployment rate in October 2020 was estimated at 8.7 percent. This is equivalent to 3.8 million unemployed Filipinos who are 15 years old and over. This unemployment rate is the lowest since April this year although it is still higher than the 4.6 percent (or about 2.0 million unemployed Filipinos who are 15 years old and over) in the same period a year ago.
