Share of Tourism to GDP

The Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts (PTSA) was revised following the Overall Revision and Rebasing (ORR) of the Philippine System of National Accounts. The PTSA revised series spans the period 2000 to 2018.

The average share of tourism to GDP is 7.4 percent during the period.

Among the forms of tourism, domestic tourism expenditure posted the highest average growth with 17.8 percent, followed by inbound tourism at 9.7 percent, then outbound tourism at 9.4 percent. (Tables 1.2, 2.2, 3.2)

In 2018, the main contributors to domestic tourism expenditure growth are Accommodation Services for Visitors, Miscellaneous, and Country-specific Tourism Characteristic Services with 21.6 percent, 21.1 percent, and 19.4 percent growth, respectively. (Table 2.2)

On average, the share of tourism to total employment was at 11.1 percent.  In 2018, there were 5.4 million employed persons in various tourism industries.  (Table 8.5)

Following a standard international practice adopted by countries, revisions and rebasing of national accounts and satellite accounts, e.g. tourism, health, etc. are guided by the 2008 UN System of National Accounts, the International Recommendations on Tourism Statistics of the UN World Tourism Organization as well as the UN Tourism Satellite Accounts of the UN Statistics Division.

Given the importance of tourism in the overall economic growth in the country, one would wonder how much income does tourism bring into the country. In response to this, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)  and the Department of Tourism (DOT) are closely working together to measure the contribution of tourism in the economy through the institutionalization of the PTSA.
