Major Vegetables and Root Crops Quarterly Bulletin, April - June 2018

April 2018 to June 2018

Bermuda Onion (Red Creole and Yellow Granex)

  • In April to June 2018, production of bermuda onion decreased by 14.8 percent, from 44.62 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2017 to 38.02 thousand metric tons this year. This was brought about by the following:
    • shifting of some areas to palay production in Central Luzon to stop the recurrence of army worms and smaller bulbs harvested due to early harvesting to control the damage of army worms; and
    • lesser bulbs harvested in MIMAROPA due to effect of army worms.
  • Central Luzon, the top producer of bermuda onion at 19.74 thousand metric tons shared 51.9 percent of the country’s total production. This was followed by MIMAROPA with 42.4 percent and Ilocos Region, 2.6 percent.
