Major Vegetables and Root Crops Quarterly Bulletin, April - June 2018

April 2018 to June 2018

Native Onion

  • The April to June 2018 production of native onion dropped by 1.0 percent, from 1.07 thousand metric tons in 2017 to 1.06 thousand metric tons this year. The decrease in the output was affected by the following:
    • lesser bulbs harvested in Central Luzon due to effect of army worms; and
    • some areas in Cagayan Valley were shifted from native onion to glutinous corn production due to availability of planting materials from the DA-RFO through the LGUs.
  • Ilocos Region, the major producer with 0.76 thousand metric tons contributed 72.0 percent of the total native onion production. It was followed by Central Luzon with 15.6 percent and CALABARZON, 6.0 percent.
