Production of onion in the fourth quarter of 2022 was estimated at 10.58 thousand metric tons. It grew by 23.3 percent from 8.58 thousand metric tons output in the same quarter of 2021. Native onion variety, with 8.54 thousand metric tons harvest, contributed 80.8 percent to the total onion production during the period. Ilocos Region posted the largest production with 9.56 thousand metric tons, sharing 90.4 percent to the total onion production this quarter. This was followed by Central Luzon with 9.5 percent share. The July to December 2022 area harvested for onion at 1.19 thousand hectares was 20.8 percent, higher than the same period of previous year’s level of 0.98 thousand hectares.
