The Philippines’ year-on-year inflation for the bottom 30% income households decelerated further to 3.1 percent in July 2019. This is the lowest inflation recorded since September 2017.

Inflation was higher in June 2019 at 4.0 percent and in July 2018, 7.6 percent.

Relative to their annual rates in June 2019, inflation were slower in the indices of all the commodity groups during the month, except for the index of housing and repairs (H&R), which posted a higher annual increment of 4.5 percent in July 2019 (see Tables 3 and 4).

The country’s food index registered a slower annual increase of 2.7 percent in July 2019. Food inflation in June 2019 was noted at 3.9 percent, and in July 2018, 7.3 percent (see Tables 5 and 7).

A downward trend was still observed in the corn index as its annual rate dropped further by 2.5 percent in July 2019. Likewise, the annual change of rice index decreased by 0.4 percent during the month. Except for the indices of eggs and fish, the other food groups exhibited slower annual increments in July 2019. Higher annual rates were seen in the indices of eggs at 2.8 percent, and fish, 7.8 percent (see Table 5).

National Capital Region (NCR)

Similarly, inflation for the bottom 30% income households in NCR eased further to 0.9 percent in July 2019. In June 2019, the annual rate in the area was posted at 1.6 percent, and in July 2018, 7.6 percent.

An annual drop of 0.9 percent was registered in the index of fuel, light and water (FLW) during the month. Moreover, slower annual gains were noted in the indices of food, beverages and tobacco (FBT) at 0.9 percent; clothing, 0.8 percent; services, 2.2 percent; and miscellaneous, 1.7 percent. On the other hand, the index of H&R recorded a higher annual mark-up of 1.4 percent during the month (see Tables 3 and 4).

Areas Outside NCR (AONCR)

Following the same trend as in the national level and in NCR, inflation for the bottom 30% income households in AONCR slowed down further by 3.1 percent in July 2019. Inflation was higher at 4.1 percent in June 2019, and 7.6 percent in July 2018.

Slowdowns in the annual increments were observed in the indices of all the commodity groups, except for the index of H&R, which exhibited a higher annual uptick of 4.5 percent during the month (see Tables 3 and 4).

Compared with their annual rates in the previous month, all the regions outside NCR registered lower annual rates in July 2019, except Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) whose inflation was higher at 3.2 percent during the month. Among the regions in AONCR, the lowest annual rate of 0.6 percent during the period was seen in Northern Mindanao, while the highest was still observed in MIMAROPA Region at 8.1 percent (see Table 4).
