·  Value of Production recovers in April 2007

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry slightly recovered at a rate of 0.1 percent in April 2007 from the seven-month decline since September 2006, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Sectors that mainly influenced the increase in production were the following: wood and wood products, publishing and printing, non-metallic mineral products, transport equipment and beverages. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a month-on-month basis, VaPI accelerated by 3.9 percent in April 2007, but this was a slow down from the previous month's (revised) two-digit growth of 15.8 percent. The decreases in production value reported by 17 major sectors were offset by the increases reported by the three (3) major sectors, led by petroleum products with 53.1 percent. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production Index (VoPI) decreases at a slower rate

On a yearly basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to drop as it posted a 1.53 percent decrease in April 2007. Significant reductions in factory output were noted in the following major sectors: textiles, tobacco, machinery excluding electrical, footwear and wearing apparel and basic metals. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

However, VoPI on a monthly basis stepped up by 4.1 percent from a two-digit increase (revised) of 15.3 percent in March 2007. The decreases in production volume reported by the 16 major sectors were offset by the increases reported by the four (4) major sectors, led by petroleum products with 48.9 percent. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

·  Value of Net Sales continues to grow

Value of Net Sales recorded a year-on-year growth of 3.4 percent in April 2007. Rubber products contributed much to the increase with 53.2 percent growth, followed by other major sectors that registered two-digit increments in sales value, namely: transport equipment, non-metallic mineral products, wood and wood products, paper and paper products, publishing and printing and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

However, Value of Net Sales on a monthly basis fell by 7.0 percent in April 2007 after registering a two-digit increase (revised) of 15.5 percent in March. This was due to the sluggish sales performance of 18 major sectors, with two-digit decreases noted in the following: miscellaneous manufactures, basic metals, leather products and transport equipment. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales exhibits positive growth

Volume of Net Sales managed to grow by 1.4 percent in April 2007. This was brought about by the significant year-on-year growth of the following sectors: rubber products, furniture and fixtures, transport equipment, wood and wood products, non-metallic mineral products, paper and paper products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

Volume of Net Sales slumped by 6.9 percent in April 2007 from its previous month's (revised) two-digit growth of 14.1 percent. This was due to the month-on-month decreases reported by 18 major sectors, with two-digit decreases noted in the following: miscellaneous manufactures, leather products, basic metals, transport equipment and machinery excluding electrical. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in April 2007 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.1 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, paper and paper products, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, leather products, basic metals, rubber products, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6. .

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.3 percent in April 2007. More than half or 56.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 32.9 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
