- Value of Production picks up in April 2013
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry grew by 0.9 percent in April 2013 from a negative rate of 9.3 percent the previous month, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Four of the nine major sectors that mainly influenced the growth were: basic metals (65.6%), chemical products (64.8%), electrical machinery (11.6%) and machinery except electrical (10.1%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
On a monthly comparison, however, VaPI fell by 0.7 percent in April 2013 compared with previous month’s 2.3 percent. The decreases in production values reported by six major sectors led by petroleum products (-47.1%) were sizeable to offset the increments of 14 sectors. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production rises in April 2013
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) rebounded as it registered a two-digit year-on-year increase of 10.3 percent in April 2013. Five of nine major sectors exhibited two-digit growth in production output, with basic metals and chemical products contributing the largest growth of 94.5 percent and 77.6 percent, respectively. The other three major sectors that posted two-digit increases were machinery except electrical (28.0%), food manufacturing (21.6%) and electrical machinery (21.1%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
While on a month-on-month comparison, VoPI posted a decline of 1.0 percent in April 2013. This was attributed to seven major sectors which recorded decreases in volume of production, offsetting the increases reported by 13 major sectors. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales rebounds in April 2013
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) gained as it posted an annual increment of 7.6 percent in April 2013, from a negative rate since January 2013. Among the 13 major sectors reporting increases in VaNSI, five major sectors significantly contributed to the growth, namely: chemical products (79.7%), basic metals (70.2%), furniture and fixtures (63.9%), textiles (39.3%) and tobacco products (31.5%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a month-on-month comparison, VaNSI also increased registering a 4.8 percent growth in April 2013. This was attributed to the two-digit increase reported by tobacco products (38.4%), basic metals (21.4%) and publishing and printing (17.3 %). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales registers a two-digit growth
On year-on-year comparison , Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) grew at a faster rate registering 17.7 percent in April 2013. The expansion in sales output was exhibited by 15 major sectors led by furniture and fixtures with 110.4 percent growth. Other major sectors that recorded two-digit increases were observed in the following: basic metals (99.9%), chemical products (93.6%), textiles (36.4%), tobacco products (34.3%), rubber and plastic products (18.0%) and electrical machinery (11.6%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
VoPI on a month-on-month comparison, however, registered a slower growth of 4.5 percent in April 2013. This was accounted for by the growth in sales output of 14 major sectors, with two-digit increases observed in the following: tobacco products (38.4%), basic metals (25.0%), publishing and printing (17.3%), non-metallic mineral products (11.3%) and fabricated metal products (10.0%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Capacity Utilization in April 2013 is 82.9 percent
Average capacity utilization in April 2013 for total manufacturing was recorded at 82.9 percent. Fifty percent of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent or more. These were:
- basic metals (87.8%)
- petroleum products (87.6%)
- non-metallic mineral products (85.7%)
- food manufacturing (84.8%)
- electrical machinery (84.4%)
- machinery except electrical (83.8%)
- chemical products (82.2%)
- rubber and plastic products (82.2%)
- paper and paper products (81.6%)
- wood and wood products (81.0%)
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 22.3 percent in April 2013. About 54.9 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.8 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity. Refer to Table 6.
