- Value of Production posts positive growth in August 2011
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing increased at a slower pace in August 2011 as it posted a growth of 2.6 percent, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This maybe attributed to the lower production values of basic metals. However, nine of 13 major sectors reported two-digit increases in production values, namely: furniture and fixtures, petroleum products, rubber and plastic products, beverages, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, chemical products, publishing and printing and leather products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
However, VaPI on a monthly comparison posted a decrement of less than one percent (0.2%) in August 2011 from the previous month growth of 2.0 percent. The three major sectors that mainly influenced the decrease in production values were publishing and printing, furniture and fixtures and basic metals. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production increases in August 2011
On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) registered a slower growth of 2.1 percent in August 2011. This was accounted mainly by the slower in production output of the footwear and wearing apparel industry. However, eight major sectors contributed to the increases in volume of production, namely: furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, beverages, paper and paper products, rubber and plastic products, chemical products, publishing and printing and leather products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
On a month-on-month basis, VoPI posted an increment of less than one percent (0.1%) in August 2011. Nine major sectors contributed to the growth led by miscellaneous manufactures (25.9%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
-
Value of Net Sales shows positive growth in August 2011
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI), on a year-on-year basis registered at a slower rate of 9.6 percent in August 2011. This was attributed mainly to the lower sales of non-metallic mineral products industry. However, twelve major sectors reported increases in net sales value, with two-digit increase in the following: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, rubber and plastic products, footwear and wearing apparel, beverages, paper and paper products and leather products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a month-on-month basis, on the other hand, VaNSI dropped as it posted a decrement of 4.2 percent in August 2011. Significant contributors to the decline were registered in the following major sectors: publishing and printing, textiles and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales also increases
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) in August 2011 recorded a year-on-year growth of 9.1 percent. Twelve major sectors reported increases in sales volume, with better sales output observed in the following: furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, beverages, food manufacturing, footwear and wearing apparel, basic metals, rubber and plastic products, and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On the other hand, VoNSI reflected a month-on-month decline of 3.8 percent, from a positive 3.4 percent in July 2011. Thirteen major sectors reported output reduction in sales, with two-digit decreases in publishing and printing, textiles and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
-
Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in August 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.3 percent. Eleven of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, paper and paper products, rubber and plastic products, machinery except electrical and textiles. Refer to Table 6.
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 15.5 percent in August 2011. About 61.1 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 23.4 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

r-revised- Technical Notes
The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.
The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.
For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.
The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.
The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
