  • Value of Production Index on upward trend in August 2013

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing recorded a two-digit annual growth of 10.7 percent from a single-digit growth of 7.7 percent in July 2013, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). The two major sectors that mainly influenced the increase in production values were chemical products and leather products, registering growth of 137.2 percent and 104.5 percent, respectively. Other major sectors that contributed to the growth with two-digit increases were furniture and fixtures (52.9%), beverages (43.7%), basic metals (33.8%), tobacco products (28.5%), non-metallic mineral products (26.4%), and wood and wood products (24.4%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a monthly comparison, VaPI grew at a slower rate of 1.7 percent in August 2013. This was attributed to the increases in production values in nine major sectors, offsetting the decreases reported by 11 major sectors. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production Index accelerates further in August 2013

On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to experience an upward trend as it posted a two-digit growth of 18.3 percent in August 2013. Three of the 20 major sectors significantly contributed to the increase in production output, namely: furniture and fixtures (175.4%), chemical products (145.0%), and leather products (101.9%).  Other top grosser that posted two-digit increments were basic metals (51.9%), tobacco products (38.3%), beverages (36.3%), non-metallic mineral products (23.6%), wood and wood products (21.6%), and rubber and plastic products (20.4%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a month-on-month basis, VoPI sustained its positive growth with a slight increase of 0.8 percent in August 2013. Major sectors that significantly contributed to the increase were wood and wood products (19.6%), chemical products (13.4%), and basic metals (10.0%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  • Value of Net Sales continues to accelerate in August 2013

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) continued to grow as it posted a year-on-year increase of 22.0 percent in August 2013. Significant expansion in sales value was observed in chemical products with an annual growth of 181.9 percent. This was followed by other eight major sectors that posted two-digit increases, namely: furniture and fixtures (72.2%), wood and wood products (39.5%), basic metals (29.3%), tobacco products (25.8%), beverages (19.3%), footwear and wearing apparel (13.5%), leather products (11.5%), and textiles (10.3%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

VaNSI, on a monthly basis, also posted an increase of 2.4 percent in August 2013. Three major sectors exhibited two-digit increases in sales value, namely: wood and wood products (27.1%), footwear and wearing apparel (26.0%), and chemical products (10.1%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales also expands in August 2013

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) grew further as it posted an annual increment of 30.3 percent in August 2013. The major contributing factor was the expansion in sales output of 14 major sectors of manufacturing industry led by furniture and fixtures and chemical products, with three-digit growth of 210.1 percent and 191.1 percent, respectively. Major sectors that also influence the expansion with two-digit increases were basic metals (46.7%), wood and wood products (36.3%), tobacco products (35.3%), rubber and plastic products (29.9%), machinery except electrical (15.1%), beverages (13.1%), and leather products (10.1%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a month-on-month comparison, VoNSI also accelerated in August 2013 posting an increase of 1.4 percent. The major sectors that recorded two-digit increases in sales volume were wood and wood products (26.6%), footwear and wearing apparel (26.3%) and chemical products (10.7%). Refer  to  Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Capacity Utilization in August 2013 is 83.4 percent

Average capacity utilization in August 2013 for total manufacturing was recorded at 83.4 percent. Fifty percent of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent or more.  These were:

  • petroleum products (88.5%)
  • basic metals (87.8%)
  • non-metallic mineral products (86.3%)
  • machinery except electrical (84.6%)
  • food manufacturing (84.4%)
  • electrical machinery (84.3%)
  • paper and paper products (83.2%)
  • chemical products (82.9%)
  • rubber and plastic products (82.5%)
  • wood and wood products (81.7%)

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 22.7 percent in August 2013. About 55.1 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.2 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity. Refer to Table 6.
