·  Value of Production declines at slower rate in December 2007

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry continued its downtrend but at a slower rate of 0.9 percent in December 2007, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Twelve (12) major sectors reported decreases in production value, with two-digit declines exhibited by the following: furniture and fixtures, basic metals, footwear and wearing apparel, and tobacco. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1 .

On a month-on-month basis, however, VaPI grew by 2.7 percent in December 2007 after posting a (revised) decrease of 0.5 percent in November. The decrease in production value reported by 12 major sectors were offset by the increases reported by eight (8) major sectors, led by beverages with 29.6 percent growth. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production Index still declines in December 2007

On a year-on-year comparison, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) dropped by 1.7 percent in December 2007. This was due to the sluggish factory performance of 13 major sectors, with two-digit decreases reported by the following: basic metals, publishing and printing, footwear and wearing apparel, petroleum products, tobacco, and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

However, on a monthly basis, VoPI rose by 3.1 percent in December 2007. This was primarily due to the increases observed in nine (9) major sectors that offset the decreases reported by 11 major sectors. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

·  Value of Net Sales improves in December 2007

Value of Net Sales on a year-on-year basis reported an increase of 4.7 percent in December 2007. Twelve (12) of the 20 major sectors reported growth in sales, with significant expansions reported by the following: beverages, petroleum products, transport equipment, machinery excluding electrical, fabricated metal products, miscellaneous manufactures, and wood and wood products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

Value of Net Sales on a month-on-month basis gained 7.8 percent in December 2007. Major sectors that contributed to the improved sales performance were the following: basic metals, beverages, furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, publishing and printing, and chemical products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales likewise recovers

On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Net Sales increased at a slower rate of 1.0 percent in December 2007 from its previous month's drop (revised) of 4.3 percent. Sectors that significantly contributed to the increase were the following: miscellaneous manufactures, beverages, transport equipment, machinery excluding electrical, fabricated metal products, wood and wood products, and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a month-on-month basis, Volume of Net Sales stepped up by 7.5 percent in December 2007 compared to its previous month's (revised) decrease of 6.1 percent. Thirteen (13) of the 20 major sectors posted increases in sales volume, with two-digit increments observed in the following: basic metals, beverages, furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, publishing and printing, and chemical products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in December 2007 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.7 percent. Ten (10) major sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, leather products, food manufacturing, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, basic metals, rubber products, and chemical products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 9.9 percent in December 2007. More than half or 57.1 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 33.0 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

For the 2007 monthly issues, the 2000 based series of MISSI indices and PPI are simultaneously released with the 1994 based indicators. The 2000 based series for 2001 to 2006 were earlier made available in separate Special Release.

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
