  • Value of Production maintains positive growth rate in February 2011

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing increased at a slower rate of 9.6 percent in February 2011 compared with a year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was attributed to the slowdown in production values of the electrical machinery and textiles sectors. However, sectors contributing significant increases in value of production were observed in the following: miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products, beverages, leather products, chemical products, rubber and plastic products, footwear and wearing apparel, basic metals and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On the other hand, VaPI on a monthly basis, VaPI reflected a decrease of 1.9 percent in February 2011, showing an improvement from its previous months two-digit decline of 11.6 percent. This was mainly due to the reduction in production values reported by 15 out of 20 major sectors. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production continues to grow at a slower rate

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) accelerated at a slower rate as it posted a year-on-year growth of 11.2 percent in February 2011. This was accounted mainly by the slowdown in the annual production volumes in the fabricated metal products and leather products sectors. However, 11 major sectors reported increases in production output, as shown in the two-digit growth of the following: miscellaneous manufactures, furniture and fixtures, beverages, chemical products, electrical machinery and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

VoPI, on a month-on-month basis, decelerated 1.8 percent in February 2011 compared with the previous months two-digit decline of 12.8 percent. Sixteen major sectors experienced drop in factory output, with two-digit decreases in the following: tobacco products, basic metals, leather products, fabricated metal products, paper and paper products, beverages and wood and wood products. Refer to Tables 1-B and

  • Value of Net Sales accelerates in February 2011

On a year-on-year basis, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) recorded a two-digit increment of 10.3 percent in February 2011. This was attributed to the improved sales performance of the following major sectors: miscellaneous manufactures, footwear and wearing apparel, rubber and plastic products, petroleum products, beverages, food manufacturing, chemical products, leather products and electrical machinery. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

Likewise, on a month-on-month comparison, VaNSI rose 6.5 percent in February 2011 from the previous months decline of 11.8 percent. Twelve major sectors brought about the increase with two-digit increment in sales value led by miscellaneous manufactures and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales expands in February 2011

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) reflected a two-digit annual increment of 11.8 percent in February 2011. The sectors that mainly influenced the increase were the following: miscellaneous manufactures, footwear and wearing apparel, furniture and fixtures, beverages, electrical machinery, chemical products and rubber and plastic products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a monthly comparison, VoNSI also climbed 6.6 percent in February 2011. Twelve major sectors significantly contributed to the increment in sales volume led by miscellaneous manufactures with 56.1 percent growth. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in February 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.0 percent. Ten major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, petroleum products, machinery except electrical, non -metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, rubber and plastic products and paper and paper products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 16.9 percent in February 2011. About 61.0 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.1 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

The Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office with the objective of providing flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.

The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.

For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.

The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors, as shown below, with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
