  • Value of Production Index grows at a slower rate in February 2014

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for manufacturing posted an annual rate of 0.9 percent in February 2014, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was brought about by the three-digit increase of tobacco products (102.2%) and the two-digit growth registered by nine sectors namely: furniture and fixtures (75.9%),machinery except electrical (61.3%), publishing and printing (53.1%), textiles (35.4%), fabricated metal products (30.5%), wood and wood products (21.6%), leather products (15.2%), paper and paper products (14.4%) and electrical machinery (12.9%).Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a monthly basis, VaPI fell down by 1.8 percent in February 2014 due to the significant decreases posted by petroleum products (-28.2%) and wood and wood products (-19.5%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production Index reflects a positive annual growth in February 2014

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) posted a slower annual growth of 1.2 percent in February 2014. This can be attributed to the slowdown in production of furniture and fixtures (130.6%) and tobacco products (102.6%). Moreover, seven sectors contributed to the positive growth namely: machinery except electrical (75.9%), publishing and printing (53.1%), fabricated metal products (36.0%) textiles (35.7%),  wood and wood products (18.4%), paper and paper products (12.3%), and leather products (11.4%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a monthly basis, VoPI decreased by 2.5 percent in February 2014. Two of the nine sectors that posted decrements significantly pulled down the VoPI. These were: petroleum products (-28.1%) and wood and wood products (-20.6%).  Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  • Value of Net Sales Index exhibits two-digit growth in February 2014

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) gained as it posted  an increment of 15.0 percent in February 2014. Fourteen  major sectors contributed to the positive performance of VANSI with 12 sectors exhibiting significant increases led by chemical products (66.6%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

VaNSI on a monthly comparison, likewise, grew by 1.2 percent in February 2014. This was mainly due to the double-digit increment of basic metals (12.7%).  Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  •  Volume of Net Sales Index also sustains double-digit growth

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) grew at the  rate of 15.4 percent in February 2014. This can be attributed to the significant increases reported by 11 major sectors namely: furniture and fixtures (80.7%), chemical products (66.0%), machinery except electrical (53.8%), fabricated metal products (42.6%), tobacco products (34.7%), textiles (29.0%), leather products (28.1%), publishing and printing (19.3%), rubber and plastic products (14.5%), food manufacturing (10.6%) and petroleum products (10.1%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

However, on a monthly basis, VoNSI grew slightly by 0.5 percent in February 2014. The significant increase of basic metals (12.6%) and the increments posted by the eleven other sectors brought about the growth in sales volume. Refer  to  Tables 2-B and 4.

  •  Capacity Utilization in February 2014 is 83.1

Average capacity utilization in February 2014 for total manufacturing was recorded at 83.1 percent. More than 50 percent or eleven of the 20 major industries operated at  80 percent and above capacity utilization rates. These are:

  • petroleum products (88.5%)

  • basic metals (87.4%)

  • non-metallic mineral products (85.6%)

  • food manufacturing (84.5 %)

  • electrical machinery (84.3%)

  • machinery except electrical (84.2%)

  • chemical products (83.4%)

  • paper and paper products (82.9%)

  • rubber and plastic products (82.3%)

  • wood and wood products (81.2%)

  • publishing and printing (80.0%)

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 22.8 percent in February 2014. About 57.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 19.4 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity. Refer to Table 6.
