- Value of Production Index maintains double-digit growth
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry on a year-on-year basis continued to climb at 16.1 percent in January 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Twelve (12) of the 20 major sectors reported double-digit increases as observed in the following: furniture and fixtures, food manufacturing, petroleum products, leather products, fabricated metal products, transport equipment, textiles, beverages, rubber products, basic metals, publishing and printing and tobacco. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
However, VaPI on a monthly comparison declined by 7.6 percent in January 2006. This was brought about by the significant decreases noted in the following sectors: fabricated metal products, petroleum products, footwear and wearing apparel, non-metallic mineral products and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index (VoPI) falls
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) went down by 2.8 percent in January 2006. The double-digit increases reported by the nine (9) major sectors was offset by the double-digit decreases reported by the six (6) major sectors, which resulted to the decline in the factory output of the manufacturing sector. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
Likewise, VoPI on a month-on-month basis fell by 13.4 percent in January 2006. Major contributors to the decreased were the following sectors: fabricated metal products, electrical machinery, footwear and wearing apparel, petroleum products, furniture and fixtures, non-metallic mineral products and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
- Value of Net Sales on increasing trend
Value of Net Sales in January 2006 continued to pick up at 27.5 percent compared to a year-ago figure. Tobacco led other major sectors with significant growth of 191.8 percent, followed by the sectors which posted double-digit increases: publishing and printing, electrical machinery, petroleum products, food manufacturing, leather products, furniture and fixtures, transport equipment, fabricated metal products, rubber products and beverages. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a monthly basis, Value of Net Sales slumped by 10.8 percent compared to the previous months (revised) increase of 6.5 percent in December 2005. Sectors that influenced the drop in sales were the following: fabricated metal products, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products, electrical machinery, furniture and fixtures, textiles, tobacco and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales increases
Volume of Net Sales on a yearly basis continued to gain as it posted a growth of 10.5 percent in January 2006. Among the 20 major sectors, tobacco led the increase with 175.0 percent, while the other major sectors which posted double-digit growth were publishing and printing, leather products, food manufacturing, fabricated metal products, petroleum products, transport equipment, beverages, furniture and fixtures and rubber products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On the other hand, Net Sales on a month-on-month basis dipped by 14.9 percent compared to the previous months (revised) slight growth of 1.8 percent. Sixteen (16) of the 20 major sectors posted decline in sales, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: fabricated metal products, electrical machinery, footwear and wearing apparel, furniture and fixtures, food manufacturing, beverages, tobacco, petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, machinery excluding electrical and textiles. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Producer's Price Index (PPI) expands further
Producer's Price Index (PPI) on a year-on-year comparison registered a two-digit growth of 19.5 percent in January 2006. Electrical machinery posted the highest price increase of 83.3 percent. Other sectors which exhibited double-digit increases were machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, publishing and printing, footwear and wearing apparel, non-metallic mineral products and food manufacturing. Refer to Table 5.
PPI on a monthly basis increased by 6.7 percent in January 2006. Double-digit price increases were noted in the following sectors: electrical machinery and machinery excluding electrical. Refer to Table 5.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in January 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.2 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber products, leather products, basic metals, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6..
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90%-100%) was 10.8 percent in January 2006. More than half or 56.6 percent of the establishments operated at 70%-89% capacity and 32.6 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

Starting 2004, weights for the Producer's Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2000 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) for establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over. Reference year for the 2000 CPBI is 1999. Refer to Press Release on Revision of 2004 PPI weights..
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
