·  Value of Production in January 2010 posts the highest ever two-digit growth

Value of Production Index (VaPI) of the manufacturing industry grew further, reflecting a two-digit increment of 38.2 percent in January 2010, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Increases in production were reported by 15 major sectors, led by petroleum products and electrical machinery, with 316.4 percent and 94.1 percent, respectively. Other major sectors that significantly contributed to the growth were the following: basic metal, machinery except electrical, wood and wood products, miscellaneous manufactures, transport equipment, non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastic products, tobacco products, leather products, fabricated metal products, chemical products, food manufacturing and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

However, VaPI on a monthly comparison slid 13.1 percent from a 3.3 percent increase in December 2009. Production values for 10 out of 20 major sectors fell with food manufacturing (35.2%) accounting for the biggest decline. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production accelerates in January 2010

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) also exhibited a two-digit increment of 39.3 percent compared to the year ago figure. This was accounted by the three-digit growth in production output observed for petroleum products (208.9%) and electrical machinery (112.6%). Other major sectors that significantly contributed to the increase were the following: basic metals, machinery except electrical, miscellaneous manufactures, fabricated metal products, transport equipment, wood and wood products, non-metallic mineral products, chemical products, leather products and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On the other hand, VoPI recorded a month-on-month decrease of 11.9 percent in January 2010. Two of the 10 major sectors significantly pulled down the production output of the manufacturing industry, namely: food manufacturing and beverages. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

·  Value of Net Sales expands in January 2010

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) accelerated as it posted a two-digit annual growth of 27.2 percent in January 2010. Significant expansion in sales value was observed in electrical machinery with a year-on-year growth of 80.6 percent. This was followed by other 11 major sectors that posted two-digit increases, namely: transport equipment, wood and wood products, food manufacturing, petroleum products, tobacco products, leather products, basic metals, publishing and printing, non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastic products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly basis, VaNSI fell 5.6 percent in January 2010 from the previous month's increase of 3.0 percent. Sales value of 11 major sectors contracted, with two-digit decreases reported in the following: machinery except electrical, beverages, furniture and fixtures and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales registers a two-digit growth

On an annual basis, Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) continued to gain by 28.2 percent in January 2010. This was brought about by improved performance in sales output of 16 major sectors led by electrical machinery, posting a two-digit growth of 97.9 percent. The other 12 major sectors that reported two-digit increases in sales output were the following: transport equipment, wood and wood products, food manufacturing, fabricated metal products, leather products, basic metals, furniture and fixtures, tobacco products, non-metallic mineral products, paper and paper products, publishing and printing and miscellaneous manufactures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

VoNSI, on a month-on-month comparison, shrank 4.3 percent in January 2010. Eleven major sectors accounted for the decline in sales volume led by machinery except electrical, beverages, furniture and fixtures and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in January 2010 for total manufacturing stood at 82.4 percent. Eleven major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, food manufacturing, paper and paper products, petroleum products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures, non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastic products and leather products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 11.6 percent in January 2010. About 65.9 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.5 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

Only the 2000 based series will be continued beginning the July 2008 issue.

Starting with the February 2008 issue, a revised industry disaggregation of the MISSI indices and PPI will be adopted to conform with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. Rubber and Plastic Products is a new major sector, consisting of two subsectors, namely: Rubber Products and Plastic Products. Rubber Products was previously a major sector while Plastic Products was one of the sub-sectors of Chemical Products.

With previously seven (7) subsectors, the major sector of Chemical Products has now six (6) subsectors, namely: Basic Chemicals and Industrial Gases, Fertilizers, Paints, Drugs and Medicines, Cosmetics and Toilet Preparations, and Miscellaneous Chemicals.

The major sector of Machinery except Electrical has been split into two subsectors, namely: Machinery and Equipment, n.e.c. and Office, Accounting and Computing Machinery.

The corresponding weights of the above major sectors and sub-sectors have been recomputed to allow for the revised computation of the indices.

Beginning the February 2008 issue, the VaPI, VoPI, VaNSI, VoNSI and the revised PPI for Total Manufacturing for all months of 2008 are computed based on the revised industry disaggregation.

Also, beginning with the January 2009 data, weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors for the PPI and Capacity Utilization Rate have been computed utilizing the results of the 2006 Census of Philippine Business and Industry for Manufacturing Establishments for ATE of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
