- Value of Production Index posts higher growth
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry on a year-on-year basis continued to rise as it posted an increase of 13.1 percent in July 2005, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Sectors that contributed largely to the increase were petroleum products, furniture and fixtures, chemical products, textile, electrical machinery, paper and paper products and rubber products.Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
Likewise, VaPI on a monthly basis improved at 3.4 percent in July 2005. Notable increases were observed in the following sectors: leather products, petroleum products and machinery excluding electrical.Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index (VoPI) dips further
Compared to the year-ago figure, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) fell by 1.1 percent in July 2005. Wood and wood products led the sectors that contributed to the drop with a decrease of 45.1 percent. Other sectors that exhibited significant decreases were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products, publishing and printing and basic metals. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
However, VoPI on a monthly comparison picked up by 2.8 percent in July this year. This was brought about by the improved performance of the following sectors: leather products, petroleum products and machinery excluding electrical. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
- Value of Net Sales continues its uptrend
Value of Net Sales on a year-on-year basis grew by 6.0 percent in July 2005. This growth was due to the significant contributions of the following sectors: petroleum products, leather products, furniture and fixtures, non-metallic mineral products, publishing and printing and basic metals. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On the other hand, month-on-month performance of Value of Net Sales dipped by 2.3 percent in July 2005 due to the double-digit decreases recorded by the following sectors: beverage, transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales slumps again
On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Net Sales stepped down by 5.8 percent in July 2005. This was attributed to the double-digit decreases reported by the following sectors: wood and wood products, machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery and textile.Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a month-on-month basis, Volume of Net Sales likewise declined by 2.8 percent in July 2005 due to weak sales performance observed in the following sectors: beverage, transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures, footwear and wearing apparel and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
Producer's Price Index (PPI) continues upbeat trend
Producer's Price Index (PPI) for total manufacturing on a yearly basis surged by 14.4 percent in July 2005. Double-digit increases were observed in electrical machinery, petroleum products, machinery excluding electrical, basic metals, publishing and printing and chemical products. Refer to Table 5.
On a monthly basis, PPI inched up by 0.7 percent in July 2005. Increments in the following sectors caused the upward movement in prices in the following sectors: petroleum products, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products, machinery excluding electrical, miscellaneous manufactures, transport equipment, furniture and fixtures and wood and wood products. Refer to Table 5.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in July 2005 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.2 percent. Major sectors with more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, petroleum products, paper and paper products, leather products, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber products, basic metals, chemical products and food manufacturing. Refer to Table 6..
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90%-100%) was 12.5 percent in July 2005. More than half or 54.0 percent of the establishments operated at 70%-89% capacity and 33.5 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

Starting 2004, weights for the Producer's Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2000 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) for establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over. Reference year for the 2000 CPBI is 1999. Refer to Press Release on Revision of 2004 PPI weights..
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
