·  Value of Production continues to decelerate

In July, Value of Production Index (VaPI) of the manufacturing industry contracted by 18.8 percent on a year-on-year basis, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Fifteen out of 20 major sectors exhibited decreases in production value with petroleum products contributing the largest decrease of 48.7 percent, followed by other nine major sectors that posted two-digit decrements, namely: leather products, basic metals, furniture and fixtures, footwear and wearing apparel, beverages, paper and paper products, transport equipment, electrical machinery and rubber and plastic productsRefer to Tables 1-A and 1.

However, VaPI on a month-on-month posted a slower growth of 1.3 percent in July 2009. The major sectors that showed two-digit increases in production values werepaper and paper products, petroleum products, and transport equipmentRefer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production shrinks in July 2009

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) also declined by 15.8 percent in July 2009 compared to a year ago. This was brought about by weak production output observed in 18 major sectors, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: leather products, footwear and wearing apparel, furniture and fixtures, beverages, basic metals, petroleum products, transport equipment, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, wood and wood products, and non-metallic mineral productsRefer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a monthly basis, VoPI slightly expanded to 1.8 percent in July 2009. The most notable increases were the two-digit growth observed in paper and paper products, electrical machinery, petroleum products, and transport equipmentRefer to Tables 1-B and 2.

·  Value of Net Sales posts a downward trend

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) recorded an annual decline of 19.1 percent in July 2009. Seventeen major sectors contributed to the decrease in sales with significant reduction noted in the following: petroleum products, furniture and fixtures, leather products, basic metals, paper and paper products, textiles, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products, and miscellaneous manufacturesRefer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly comparison, VaNSI slipped to 1.2 percent in July 2009. This was primarily due to the two-digit decrease in sales value reported by beverages, at 27.2 percent.Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales continues to decline

On a year-on-year comparison, Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) for July 2009 went down to 16.2 percent higher compared to 14.2 percent decline recorded in the previous month. Twelve of the 16 major sectors accounted for the significant reductions in sales output, namely: leather products, textiles, furniture and fixtures, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, petroleum products, basic metals, paper and paper products, non-metallic mineral products, wood and wood products, electrical machinery, and miscellaneous manufacturesRefer to Tables 2-B and 4.

VoNSI, on a month-on-month basis, fell 0.6 percent in July 2009 from its previous month's 2.7 percent growth. This was brought about by the shrinking sales output ofbeverages and furniture and fixtures, with 27.2 percent and 11.6 percent decreases, respectively. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in July 2009 for total manufacturing was estimated at 81.6 percent. Ten (10) major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, machinery except electrical, paper and paper products, leather products, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, rubber and plastic products, and non-metallic mineral productsRefer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.2 percent in July 2009. About 65.3 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 24.5 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

Only the 2000 based series will be continued beginning the July 2008 issue.

Starting with the February 2008 issue, a revised industry disaggregation of the MISSI indices and PPI will be adopted to conform with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings.Rubber and Plastic Products is a new major sector, consisting of two subsectors, namely: Rubber Products and Plastic ProductsRubber Products was previously a major sector while Plastic Products was one of the sub-sectors of Chemical Products.

With previously seven (7) subsectors, the major sector of Chemical Products has now six (6) subsectors, namely: Basic Chemicals and Industrial Gases, Fertilizers, Paints, Drugs and Medicines, Cosmetics and Toilet Preparations, and Miscellaneous Chemicals.

The major sector of Machinery except Electrical has been split into two subsectors, namely: Machinery and Equipment, n.e.c. and Office, Accounting and Computing Machinery.

The corresponding weights of the above major sectors and sub-sectors have been recomputed to allow for the revised computation of the indices.

Thus, beginning the February 2008 issue, the VaPI, VoPI, VaNSI, VoNSI and the revised PPI for Total Manufacturing for all months of 2008 are computed based on the revised industry disaggregation.

Also, beginning with the January 2009 data, weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors for the PPI and Capacity Utilization Rate have been computed utilizing the results of the 2006 Census of Philippine Business and Industry for Manufacturing Establishments for ATE of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
