- Value of Production continues to accelerate in July 2010
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing increased at a slower rate of 16.0 percent in July 2010, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was attributed by 16 major sectors that reported increases in production value, with two-digit growth observed in the following: leather products, transport equipment, furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products, beverages, basic metal, rubber and plastic products, electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, textiles and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
VaPI, on a month-on-month basis, maintained its positive growth with an increment of 1.7 percent in July 2010. Two of the 20 major sectors that significantly contributed to the increase were tobacco products and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production likewise grows in July 2010
On a yearly comparison, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) also recorded a two-digit increase of 22.9 percent in July 2010. Thirteen of 16 major sectors exhibited two-digit growth in production output, with furniture and fixtures influencing the largest increment of 88.1 percent. The other 12 major sectors that posted two-digit increases were the following: machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactures, transport equipment, leather products, non-metallic mineral products, beverages, basic metals, petroleum products, textiles, rubber and plastic products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
VoPI, on a month-on-month comparison, posted an increase of 1.8 percent in July 2010. This was contributed by three major sectors, namely: petroleum products, tobacco products, and basic metals. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales sustains two-digit growth
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) sustained a year-on-year growth as it posted 10.6 percent increase in July 2010. This was accounted for by 14 major sectors with two-digit increases in sales value exhibited by the following: leather products, miscellaneous manufactures, fabricated metal products, beverages, transport equipment, machinery except electrical, petroleum products, electrical machinery, wood and wood products, textiles and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a monthly basis, however, VaNSI slid by 5.3 percent in July 2010. This was due to decreases in nine (9) major sectors, offsetting the increases reported by 11 major sectors. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales grows at a slower rate
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) recorded an increment of 17.1 percent in July 2010. Fifteen of the 20 major sectors posted gains in sales output, with two-digit growth registered by the following: machinery except electrical, miscellaneous manufactures, electrical machinery, leather products, beverages, fabricated metal products, transport equipment, textiles, wood and wood products, petroleum products, paper and paper products and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a month-on-month basis, VoNSI went down 5.2 percent in July 2010. The contraction was due to the significant reduction in sales output observed in beverages (23.1%) and basic metals (18.7%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in July 2010 for total manufacturing stood at 83.1 percent. Eleven major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, petroleum products, electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, non-metallic mineral products, paper and paper products, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, rubber and plastic products and leather products. Refer to Table 6.
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 17.0 percent in July 2010. About 61.2 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 21.8 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.
Capacity Utilization | Percent Share |
---|---|
Below 50 percent | 3.9 |
50 percent - 59 percent | 7.4 |

- Technical Notes
The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.
The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.
For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.
The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.
The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
PSIC CODE INDUSTRY DESCRIPTION 15 except 155 Food Manufacturing* 155 Beverages 16 Tobacco products 17 Textiles* 18,174 and 192 Footwear and wearing apparel 191 Leather products 20 Wood and wood products* 21 Paper and paper products 22 Publishing and printing 23 Petroleum products* 24 Chemical products* 25 Rubber and plastic products* 26 Non-metallic mineral products* 27 Basic metals* 28 Fabricated metal products 29 and 30 Machinery except electrical* 31 and 32 Electrical machinery* 34 and 35 Transport equipment 36 Furniture and fixtures 33 and 39 Miscellaneous manufactures Note: * - Major sectors categorized into sub-sectors
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
