- Value of Production accelerates in July 2011
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing recorded an average annual growth of 6.7 percent in July 2011, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was accounted for by 13 major sectors with two-digit increment in production values exhibited by the following: furniture and fixtures, publishing and printing, petroleum products, paper and paper products, rubber and plastic products, beverages, chemical products and basic metals. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
On a monthly comparison, VaPI likewise posted a 3.4 percent growth from a less than one percent (0.1%) decrement in June 2011. The three major sectors that mainly influenced the increase in production values were basic metals, leather products and transport equipment. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production posts positive growth
On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) grew as it posted an increment of 6.8 percent in July 2011. This was attributed to the increases in production values reported by 13 major sectors, led by furniture and fixtures which exhibited a three-digit growth of 134.7 percent. Other major sectors that significantly contributed to the growth were: publishing and printing, paper and paper products, beverages, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products and rubber and plastic products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
VoPI, on a month- on-month basis, climbed by 5.9 percent in July 2011. compared with the previous month's decline of 1.6 percent. Fourteen of the 20 major sectors reported increases in production output, led by basic metals, leather products, transport equipment, machinery except electrical and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
-
Value of Net Sales on increasing trend in July 2011
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) on a year-on-year performance improved in July 2011, reflecting a two-digit increment of 14.5 percent. The major contributing sectors with significant increases in sales value were noted in the following: basic metals, food manufacturing, publishing and printing, beverages, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products and rubber and plastic products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
Also, VaNSI on a month-on-month basis, grew as it posted an increase of 2.7 percent in July 2011. Significant contributors to the growth were registered in the following major sectors: basic metals, leather products, tobacco products and electrical machinery. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales shows two-digit growth
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) posted a two-digit increment of 14.6 percent in July 2011. This was attributed to better sales output observed in 13 major sectors, with two-digit growth observed in the following: furniture and fixtures, publishing and printing, basic metals, beverages, food manufacturing and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a month-on-month change, VoNSI recovered as it posted an increase of 5.2 percent in July 2011 from a negative 1.2 percent. Twelve major sectors reported output expansion in sales, with two-digit increases in basic metals, leather products, tobacco products, machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products and textiles. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
-
Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in July 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.3 percent. Ten of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber and plastic products and machinery except electrical. Refer to Table 6.
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 15.7 percent in July 2011. About 60.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 23.5 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

r-revised- Technical Notes
The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.
The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.
For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.
The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.
The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
