·  Value of Production maintains a two-digit growth in June 2010

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing recorded a slower average annual growth of 16.3 percent in June 2010, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Among the 16 major sectors exhibiting increases in production values, 14 sectors significantly contributed to the increase, namely: transport equipment, furniture and fixtures, petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, leather products, beverages, paper and paper products, basic metal, fabricated metal products, non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastic products and textiles. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a month-on-month change, VaPI posted a 0.1 percent increase from 5.2 percent increment in May 2010. This was attributed to the following major sectors: footwear and wearing apparel, miscellaneous manufactures and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production remains at two-digit growth in June 2010

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) also accelerated in June 2010 posting a year-on-year growth of 23.4 percent. Fourteen of 16 major sectors exhibited two-digit increases in production output, with furniture and fixtures influencing the largest increment of 97.0 percent. The other 13 major sectors that posted two-digit increases were the following: electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products, beverages, paper and paper products, non-metallic mineral products, leather products, textiles, fabricated metal products, basic metals and rubber and plastic products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On the other hand, VoPI on a month-on-month comparison, dropped at a slower rate of 0.8 percent in June 2010. This was contributed by three major sectors, namely: tobacco products, petroleum products and wood and wood products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

·  Value of Net Sales grows further

On a year-on-year basis, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) continued to grow at a faster rate of 16.9 percent in June 2010. This was accounted for by 14 major sectors that exhibited two-digit increases in sales value, namely: petroleum products, leather products, transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures, basic metals, machinery except electrical, beverages, fabricated metal products, electrical machinery, paper and paper products and textiles. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

Likewise, VaNSI on a monthly basis, accelerated by 5.7 percent in June 2010. The expansion was due to the growth in sales exhibited by 13 major sectors, with two-digit increases observed in the following: publishing and printing, beverages, basic metals, fabricated metal products and miscellaneous manufactures. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales likewise accelerates

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) gained further by 24.1 percent in June 2010. This was attributed to the better performances of 16 major sectors in sales output, led by machinery except electrical and electrical machinery with growth rates recorded at 52.1 percent and 47.6 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a month-on-month basis, VoNSI improved by 4.8 percent in June 2010. Twelve major sectors accounted for the growth with two-digit increases observed in the following: publishing and printing, beverages, basic metals, furniture and fixtures, fabricated metal products and miscellaneous manufactures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in June 2010 for total manufacturing stood at 83.1 percent. Eleven major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, chemical products, rubber and plastic products and leather products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 15.2 percent in June 2010. About 63.6 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 21.2 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.

The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.

For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

The indices generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.

The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
