  • Value of Production Index grows further

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry on a year-on-year basis registered an increase of 9.9 percent in March 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Sectors which posted considerable increases were tobacco, fabricated metal products, miscellaneous manufactures, textiles, food manufacturing, petroleum products, paper and paper products, electrical machinery, basic metals, leather products and rubber products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a monthly basis, VaPI also reflected an increment of 3.5 percent in March 2006. Sectors that mainly influenced the increase were miscellaneous manufactures, food manufacturing, chemical products, electrical machinery, publishing and printing, rubber products, textiles and tobacco. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continues to fall

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) in March 2006 was still on its downtrend at 6.6 percent compared to its year-ago figure. Significant reductions in factory output were noted in the following major sectors: furniture and fixtures, machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, wood and wood products, transport equipment, footwear and wearing apparel, non-metallic mineral products and leather products. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

On the other hand, VoPI on a monthly basis recovered with a 4.5 percent growth in March 2006 from a drop of (revised) 1.3 percent in the previous month. Major increases were reported by the following sectors: miscellaneous manufactures, machinery excluding electrical, chemical products, food manufacturing, electrical machinery, publishing and printing, textiles, rubber products and tobacco. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

  • Value of Net Sales sustains positive growth

On a year-on-year basis, Value of Net Sales registered a single-digit growth of 7.2 percent in March 2006 compared to the previous month's (revised) two-digit growth of 10.6 percent. Significant increases were observed in the following sectors: tobacco, miscellaneous manufactures, electrical machinery, basic metals, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a month-on-month basis, Value of Net Sales likewise stepped up by 8.5 percent in March 2006 from its previous month's (revised) slump of 1.8 percent. Sectors that exhibited significant expansion in sales were the following: miscellaneous manufactures, non-metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, publishing and printing, tobacco, chemical products, wood and wood products andfabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

Volume of Net Sales drops

Volume of Net Sales on a yearly basis continued to decline by 4.3 percent compared to its year-ago figure. This was brought about by significant drop in sales volume registered by nine (9) major sectors, namely: machinery excluding electrical, wood and wood products, electrical machinery, transport equipment, leather products, non-metallic mineral products, furniture and fixtures, petroleum products and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

Volume of Net Sales, on a monthly basis, improved by 8.4 percent in March 2006 compared to the previous month's (revised) decline of 1.1 percent. This was due to the increases in sales posted by seventeen (17) major sectors. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Producer's Price Index (PPI) still on its two-digit growth

Producer's Price Index (PPI) for manufacturing continued its year-on-year two-digit growth of 17.7 percent in March 2006. Eighteen (18) of the 20 major sectors registered price increases, led by electrical machinery with an increase of 93.4 percent. Other sectors that posted double-digit increases were leather products, machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Table 5.

PPI on monthly basis, however, slightly went down by 1.0 percent in March 2006. Price increases reported by the twelve (12) major sectors were offset by the price decreases reported by the eight (8) major sectors. Refer to Table 5.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in March 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.1 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber products, leather products, basic metals, food manufacturing, chemical products and textiles. Refer to Table 6. .

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90%-100%) was 10.1 percent in March 2006. More than half or 57.9 percent of the establishments operated at 70%-89% capacity and 32.0 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer's Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over..

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
