  •   Value of Production rebounds in May 2013

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing posted a year-on-year increment of 9.7 percent in May 2013, after registering declines since January 2013, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was attributed to the increase in production values exhibited by six major sectors, with significant expansion observed in petroleum products that posted a three-digit growth of 136.6 percent, followed by other two major sectors that posted two-digit increments, namely: chemical products (73.8%) and basic metals (49.0%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

Likewise, on a monthly basis, VaPI grew 7.9 percent in May 2013 from a 1.7 percent decline in the previous month. This was brought about by the expanded production performance of 12 major sectors led by petroleum products (106.6%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  •   Volume of Production expands further in May 2013

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) on a year-on-year performance continued to grow at a faster rate of 20.4 percent in May 2013. Petroleum products contributed significantly to the increase with 139.4 percent, followed by other major sectors that posted two-digit increases, namely:  chemical products (84.8%), basic metals (68.1%), furniture and fixtures (56.6%) and electrical machinery (12.0%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a month-on-month comparison, VoPI also went up by 7.4 percent in May 2013, after posting a decline of 1.0 percent in the previous month. Five of the 10 major sectors that mainly influenced the growth were: petroleum products (103.1%), tobacco products (63.1%), furniture and fixtures (21.5%), chemical products (14.9%) and footwear and wearing apparel (11.3%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  •   Value of Net Sales grows in May 2013

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) registered a year-on-year growth of 6.4 percent in in May 2013. This was primarily due to the increases in sales value of seven major sectors led by chemical products (94.3%), outpacing the decrements of 13 major sectors. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly basis, VaNSI recorded a minimum increase of 0.7 percent growth in May 2013. This was attributed to the two-digit growth reported by the following: tobacco products (19.9%), footwear and wearing apparel (13.1%), leather products (12.9%) and chemical products (11.5%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  •   Volume of Net Sales remains at two-digit growth

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) posted an annual growth of 16.8 percent in May 2013. This was accounted by the three-digit growth in sales output observed for furniture and fixtures (110.6%) and chemical products (106.6%). Other major sectors that significantly contributed to the increase were the following: basic metals (78.4%), tobacco products (57.8%) and rubber and plastic products (10.6%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

VoPI on a month-on-month comparison, slightly grew 0.3 percent in May 2013. Significant increases in sales output were noted in 5 of the 10 major sectors that registered growth, namely: tobacco products (19.9%), furniture and fixtures (15.6%), footwear and wearing apparel (13.3%), leather products (12.7%) and chemical products (11.8%). Refer  to  Tables 2-B and 4.

  •   Capacity Utilization in May 2013 is 83.1 percent

Average capacity utilization in May 2013 for total manufacturing was recorded at 83.1 percent. Fifty percent of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent or more.  These were:

  • basic metals (88.4%)
  • petroleum products (87.9%)
  • non-metallic mineral products (85.8%)
  • electrical machinery (84.4%)
  • food manufacturing (84.2%)
  • machinery except electrical (84.1%)
  • chemical products (82.5%)
  • rubber and plastic products (81.8%)
  • paper and paper products (81.6%)
  • wood and wood products (80.9%)

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 22.4 percent in May 2013.  About 54.6 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 23.0 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity. Refer to Table 6.
