  • Value of Production continues to decelerate at a slower rate

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing posted a year-on-year decrease of 5.4 percent from a double-digit decrease of 10.5 percent in October 2011, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was attributed by 11 major sectors that reported decreases in production value. Double-digit decreases were observed in the following major sectors: wood and wood products (-28.7%), food manufacturing (-26.6%), machinery except electrical (-20.6%), miscellaneous manufactures (-12.1%) and textiles (-11.2%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a monthly basis, VaPI recorded an increase of 6.6 percent from a decline of 6.2 percent in October 2011. This can be attributed to the double-digit increases in electrical machinery (41.6%) and basic metals (14.4%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production likewise declines in November 2011.

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to decelerate as it registered a slower decline of 5.2 percent in November 2011. Out of 20 major sectors of manufacturing industry, 11 major sectors posted decreases in VoPI. The five major sectors that posted double-digit decreases were as follow: machinery except electrical (-29.8%), wood and wood products (-28.8%), food manufacturing (-28.2%), basic metals (-13.3%) and textiles (-10.8%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a month-on-month comparison, VoPI posted an increase of 7.5 percent in November 2011. Double-digit increases in VoPI were observed in the following major sectors: electrical machinery (41.1%), basic metals (13.8%) and furniture and fixtures 10.5%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  • Value of Net Sales exhibits one-digit increase in November 2011

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) continued to grow at a slower rate as it posted a year-on-year increase of 6.0 percent in November 2011. The four major sectors that registered double-digit increases in VaNSI were as follow: chemical products (46.0%), beverages (20.2%), petroleum products (16.8%) and wood and wood products (11.8%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly basis, VaNSI decreased by 3.3 percent in November 2011. Double-digit decreases were posted in the following major sectors: transport equipment (-25.7%), leather products (-23.5%), tobacco products (-19.1%), wood and wood products (-14.4%), electrical machinery (-14.3%), miscellaneous manufactures (-13.1%) and textiles (-12.6%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales likewise posts an increase in November 2011

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) on a year-on-year basis registered an increment of 6.2 percent in November 2011. Ten major sectors reported increases in net sales volume. Double-digit increases were posted in the following major sectors: furniture and fixtures (53.9%), chemical products (47.4%), beverages (24.8%), transport equipment (21.6%), wood and wood products (11.7%) and non-metallic mineral products (11.1%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a month-on-month basis, VoNSI declined by 2.5 percent in November 2011. Significant contributors to the decline were registered in the following major sectors: leather products(-23.5%), transport equipment(-19.2%),tobacco products (-19.1%), electrical machinery (-14.6%), wood and wood products (-14.4%), miscellaneous manufactures (-13.4%) and textiles (-12.5%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in November 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.2 percent. Ten of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of more than 80 percent, namely: basic metals (86.9%), petroleum products (86.6%), food manufacturing (86.5%), electrical machinery (85.7%), non-metallic mineral products (84.8%), chemical products (83.3%), rubber and plastic products (82.4%), paper and paper products (82.2%), machinery except electrical (81.6) and miscellaneous manufactures (81.3%). Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 15.1 percent in November 2011. About 60.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 24.1 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.

The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.

For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.

The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
