- Value of Production Index (VaPI) continues to drop
Value of Production Index (VaPI) of the manufacturing industry continued to decline at a slower rate of 0.6 percent in September 2002 compared with year ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Significant decreases were observed in the following sectors: basic metals, machinery excluding electrical, furniture and fixtures and paper and paper products (see Table 1-A).
On a month-on-month basis, VaPI's performance improved by 3.6 percent compared to the previous month's figure of 0.3 percent. Sectors that contributed most to the increase were petroleum products and beverage (see Table 1-A).
- Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continues its downtrend
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) followed a similar trend as VaPI as it fell to 4.9 percent in September 2002 on a year-on-year basis. Significant decreases were observed in the following sectors: basic metals, machinery excluding electrical, paper and paper products, publishing and printing, and furniture and fixtures (see Table 1-B).
On a monthly basis, VoPI registered an increment of 3.2 percent due to the growth exhibited by the two (2) sectors, namely: petroleum products and beverage (see Table 1-B).
- Value of Net Sales gains
Year-on-year growth in value of net sales made a turnaround increase of 7.4 percent in September 2002 from a decline of 4.9 percent in the previous month. Major sources of increase were from ten sectors: leather products, machinery excluding electrical, rubber products, fabricated metal products, footwear and wearing apparel, textile, tobacco, food manufacturing, electrical machinery and publishing and printing (see Table 2-A).
On a monthly basis, value of net sales gained momentum of 5.7 percent in September 2002, offsetting the previous month's decline of 1.3 percent. Significant increases were contributed by the following sectors: electrical machinery, beverage and footwear and wearing apparel (see Table 2-A).
- Net Sales Volume picks up
Net sales volume grew by 1.9 percent in September 2002 on a year-on-year basis from a decline of 9.2 percent in the previous month. The turnaround was due to the resulting growth in the following sectors: leather products, rubber products, machinery excluding electrical, textile, fabricated metal products, footwear and wearing apparel, tobacco and food manufacturing (see Table 2-B).
On a month-on-month basis, volume of net sales managed a growth of 5.3 percent from a decline of 2.3 percent in August 2002. This was brought about by significant increases in beverage, electrical machinery and footwear and wearing apparel sectors (see Table 2-B).
- Producer's Price Index (PPI) continues to increase
The Producer Price Index for total manufacturing registered a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent in September 2002. Double-digit increases were registered by the following sectors: publishing and printing (26.7%); wood and wood products (22.7%); beverage (13.7%) and footwear and wearing apparel (10.1%) (see Table 5).
On a month-on-month basis, PPI for total manufacturing went up, but slower by 0.4 percent. Increases were posted by the following sectors: wood and wood products, electrical machinery, basic metals, petroleum products, furniture and fixtures, transport equipment, beverage, leather products, chemical products, food manufacturing and textile (see Table 5).
- Capacity Utilization
For September 2002, average capacity utilization was estimated at 75.8 percent for total manufacturing. Sectors with more than 80% capacity utilization rate were the following: petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, fabricated metal products, rubber products, machinery excluding electrical, beverage, paper and paper products and tobacco (see Table 6).
The proportion of responding establishments that operated at full capacity (90%-100%) in September 2002 was 20.9 percent. About 39.2 percent of the responding establishments operated at 70%-89% capacity and 39.9 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.
