- Value of Production Index maintains positive trend
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry on a year-on-year basis registered an increase of 9.7 percent in September 2005 from a double-digit growth of (revised) 17.9 percent in August 2005, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Sectors that significantly attributed to the increase were furniture and fixtures, petroleum products, leather products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures and rubber products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1. 1.
However, VaPI on a monthly basis improved by 1.8 percent in September 2005. Notable increases were shown by furniture and fixtures and beverages sectors. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index (VoPI) drops
On a yearly basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) exhibited a decrease of 5.0 percent in September 2005 from a (revised) 5.0 percent increase in the previous month. This was due to the lesser production demand in the following sectors: wood and wood products, machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, basic metals and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
Also, VoPI on a month-on-month comparison dropped by 1.8 percent in September 2005. This was brought about by the slacked performance in production of the non-metallic mineral products sector. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
- Value of Net Sales sustains positive growth
Value of Net Sales posted an increment of 6.7 percent in September 2005 from a two-digit growth exhibited during the previous month. Major sectors which reported substantial increases were leather products, furniture and fixtures, basic metals, petroleum products, tobacco, miscellaneous manufactures and chemical products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a monthly basis, Value of Net Sales grew slightly by 2.6 percent in September 2005. Sectors that made significant contributions to the increase were the following: furniture and fixtures, wood and wood products, chemical products and electrical machinery. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales decreases
Volume of Net Sales fell by 4.5 percent in September 2005 compared to a year-ago figure. Sectors that mainly influenced the drop in sales were wood and wood products, machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, textiles and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
Similarly, Net Sales Volume on a monthly comparison declined by 0.3 percent in September 2005 from its (revised) 1.9 percent increase in the previous month. Significant decreases were observed in the following sectors: publishing and printing, fabricated metal products and textiles. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Producer's Price Index (PPI) continues its uptrend
Producer's Price Index (PPI) for manufacturing on a yearly comparison was up by 15.5 percent in September 2005. Sectors that contributed much to the growth were electrical machinery, petroleum products, machinery excluding electrical, basic metals and publishing and printing. Refer to Table 5.
On a month-on-month basis, PPI continued to rise as it posted an increment of 3.8 percent in September 2005. This was brought about by the double-digit price increase of 19.5 percent in the electrical machinery sector. Refer to Table 5.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in September 2005 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.3 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, petroleum products, paper and paper products, miscellaneous manufactures, leather products, rubber products, basic metals, chemical products, and food manufacturing. Refer to Table 6..
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90%-100%) was 12.5 percent in September 2005. More than half or 54.0 percent of the establishments operated at 70%-89% capacity and 33.5 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

- Technical Notes
Starting 2004, weights for the Producer's Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2000 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) for establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over. Reference year for the 2000 CPBI is 1999. Refer to Press Release on Revision of 2004 PPI weights..
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
