- Value of Production registers negative growth
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry slowed down by 0.1 percent in September 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was due to the two-digit decreases in production reported by the following major sectors: machinery excluding electrical, leather products, textiles, chemical products, publishing and printing, tobacco, petroleum products, wood and wood products and rubber products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
On a monthly basis, VaPI dropped by 3.7 percent from its previous months (revised) increase of 4.4 percent. Sectors that made significant contributions to the decrease were the following: leather products, chemical products, rubber products, petroleum products, wood and wood products and machinery excluding electrical. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index (VoPI) dips further
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to tumble as it posted a decrease of 8.3 percent in September 2006. Thirteen (13) of the 20 major sectors reported decreases in factory output, with two-digit reductions observed in the following: machinery excluding electrical, leather products, textiles, footwear and wearing apparel, chemical products, rubber products, tobacco, wood and wood products, petroleum products, electrical machinery and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
VoPI on a monthly comparison also dipped by 3.5 percent from a positive growth (revised) of 5.4 percent in August 2006. Sectors that significantly pulled down production were the following: leather products, chemical products, rubber products, wood and wood products and machinery excluding electrical. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
- Value of Net Sales maintains positive growth
On a yearly basis, Value of Net Sales grew by 2.0 percent in September 2006. Though six (6) major sectors posted two-digit decreases, this was offset by the two-digit growth in four (4) major sectors that sustained the positive sales performance of the manufacturing industry. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a month-on-month basis, Value of Net Sales continued to grow at a slower rate of 1.5 percent in September 2006, mainly due to the increases observed in eleven (11) major sectors. This was led by On a month-on-month basis, Value of Net Sales continued to grow at a slower rate of 1.5 percent in September 2006, mainly due to the increases observed in eleven (11) major sectors. This was led by beverages and tobacco, with growth of 14.4 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3. and tobacco, with growth of 14.4 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales still down
Volume of Net Sales continued its downtrend as it posted a year-on-year decrease of 6.3 percent in September 2006. Machinery excluding electrical continued to lead the major sectors as it exhibited the highest decline of 79.8 percent. Eight other sectors that reported two-digit decreases were the following: leather products, footwear and wearing apparel, electrical machinery, wood and wood products, textiles, tobacco, transport equipment and furniture and fixtures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a monthly basis, Volume of Net Sales grew by 2.0 percent in September 2006 from its previous months (revised) increase of 1.7 percent. Major sectors that reported significant expansion in sales volume were beverages, furniture and fixtures and tobacco. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in September 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.2 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, basic metals, leather products, rubber products, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6..
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.2 percent in September 2006. More than half or 57.5 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 32.3 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
