·  Value of Production retains its downward trend

On a year-on-year comparison, the Value of Production Index (VaPI) of the manufacturing industry remained to reflect a decelerating growth as it posted a stagnant 15.4 percent drop in September 2009, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). The major contributing factor was the contraction in growth of nine (9) major sectors of manufacturing industry, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: petroleum products, leather products, furniture and fixtures, beverages, paper and paper products, footwear and wearing apparel, electrical machinery, tobacco products, andfabricated metal productsRefer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a monthly basis, VaPI improved by 5.5 percent in September 2009. This was supported mainly by the high growth in transport equipment, which jumped by 18.5 percent after posting a fall of 0.3 percent during the previous month. Other major sectors that posted double-digit increases were, beverages, electrical machinery, and machinery except electricalRefer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production still contracts in September 2009

In September 2009, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) posted a slower average annual decrease of 12.4 percent. Ten (10) major sectors reported output cuts, with two-digit declines in petroleum products, leather products, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, paper and paper products, tobacco products, textiles, chemical products, wood and wood products, and electrical machineryRefer to Tables 1-B and 2.

Volume wise, production on a monthly comparison, modestly expanded by 6.5 percent, a turnaround from its 1.5 percent slide last month. The reversal in production performances of six (6) major sectors of the manufacturing industry contributed much to the increase, as follows: electrical machinery, beverages, transport equipment, petroleum products, paper and paper products, and machinery except electricalRefer to Tables 1-B and 2.

·  Value of Net Sales remains its downtrend

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI), on a yearly comparison, continued its downtrend as it slowly decelerated by 10.8 percent in September 2009. This was primarily due to the double-digit drops in value of net sales observed in nine (9) major sectors of the manufacturing industry led by petroleum products and furniture and fixtures, which both contracted by 41.3 percent. Other sectors that strongly influenced the decrease in value of net sales were leather products, paper and paper products, beverages, textiles, fabricated metal products, footwear and wearing apparel and chemical productsRefer to Tables 2-A and 3.

However, on a monthly comparison, VaNSI moved up by 4.5 percent in September 2009, a turnaround from its previous month's decrease of 1.5 percent. The increase was due to the double-digit increments in value of net sales of five (5) major sectors of the manufacturing industry led by machinery except electrical, which surged by 22.1 percent following a rise of 6.0 percent last month Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales also continues to decelerate

Like VaNSI, the Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) continued to experience a downward trend as it shrank by 7.7 percent in September 2009. Major manufacturing sectors that pulled down the sales volume were leather products, textiles, petroleum products, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, paper and paper products, chemical products, furniture and fixtures, and publishing and printingRefer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a monthly basis, VoNSI improved by 5.5 percent in September 2009. This was due to the double-digit increases observed in five major sectors of the manufacturing industry, as follows: machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, beverages, transport equipment, and tobacco productsRefer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in September 2009 for total manufacturing stood at 81.9 percent. Eleven (11) major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, leather products, paper and paper products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures, footwear and wearing apparel, non-metallic mineral products and rubber and plastic productsRefer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.8 percent in September 2009. About 64.4 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 24.8 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

Only the 2000 based series will be continued beginning the July 2008 issue.

Starting with the February 2008 issue, a revised industry disaggregation of the MISSI indices and PPI will be adopted to conform with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings.Rubber and Plastic Products is a new major sector, consisting of two subsectors, namely: Rubber Products and Plastic ProductsRubber Products was previously a major sector while Plastic Products was one of the sub-sectors of Chemical Products.

With previously seven (7) subsectors, the major sector of Chemical Products has now six (6) subsectors, namely: Basic Chemicals and Industrial Gases, Fertilizers, Paints, Drugs and Medicines, Cosmetics and Toilet Preparations, and Miscellaneous Chemicals.

The major sector of Machinery except Electrical has been split into two subsectors, namely: Machinery and Equipment, n.e.c. and Office, Accounting and Computing Machinery.

The corresponding weights of the above major sectors and sub-sectors have been recomputed to allow for the revised computation of the indices.

Beginning the February 2008 issue, the VaPI, VoPI, VaNSI, VoNSI and the revised PPI for Total Manufacturing for all months of 2008 are computed based on the revised industry disaggregation.

Also, beginning with the January 2009 data, weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors for the PPI and Capacity Utilization Rate have been computed utilizing the results of the 2006 Census of Philippine Business and Industry for Manufacturing Establishments for ATE of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
