  •    Value of Production Index maintains positive growth in September 2014

Value of Production Index (VaPI) posted a year-on-year increase of 3.8 percent from a two-digit growth of 10.9 percent in September 2013, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This maybe explained by the decline in production value of the transport equipment industry. While 10 major sectors reported increases in VaPI led by printing (195.4%), with consistent three-digit growth since May 2014. The four other major sectors that posted two-digit increases were beverages (50.6%), fabricated metal products (34.4%), leather products (16.0%), and petroleum products (10.4%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  •    Volume of Production grows at a slower rate

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) climbed slowly to 3.2 percent increase in September 2014 compared with two-digit growth of 19.0 percent registered during the same period last year. Six of nine major sectors exhibited two-digit growth in production output, with printing (195.4%) constantly influencing the increment. The other five major sectors that posted two-digit increases were the following: beverages (49.4%), fabricated metal products (42.6%), leather products (12.8%), petroleum products (12.4%), and machinery except electrical (10.9%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  •    Value of Net Sales Index increases at a slower pace

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) reported a minimal increase of 1.8 percent in September 2014 compared with 24.5 percent registered in September 2013. This was mainly accounted for the reduction in sales value in the basic metals and furniture and fixtures sectors. However, printing contributed significantly to the increase with 112.4 percent, followed by major sectors that registered two-digit growth in VaNSI, namely: fabricated metal products (31.4%), textiles (22.4%), beverages (16.7%), rubber and plastic products (13.7%) and paper and paper products (10.8%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  •    Volume of Net Sales Index slightly grows in September 2014

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) merely grew by 1.2 percent in September 2014 compared with 33.6 percent in September 2013. The increases in VoNSI was brought about by the following major sectors: printing (112.4 percent), fabricated metal products (39.5%), textiles (21.3%), beverages (15.7%), rubber and plastic products (11.8%), and petroleum products (10.8%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  •    Capacity Utilization in September 2014 is 83.5 percent

Average capacity utilization in September 2014 for total manufacturing stood at 83.5 percent. More than 50 percent or eleven of the 20 major industries operated at 80 percent and above capacity utilization rates. These are:

  • basic metals (88.8%)
  • petroleum products (88.6%)
  • non-metallic mineral products (86.3%)
  • machinery except electrical (84.6%)
  • electrical machinery (84.6%)
  • food manufacturing (84.5 %)
  • chemical products (84.0%)
  • paper and paper products (83.0%)
  • rubber and plastic products (82.5%)
  • printing (81.9%)
  • wood and wood products (81.3%)

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 23.3 percent in September 2014. About 57.7 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 19.0 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity. Refer to Table 6 and B.
