p /p p align="JUSTIFY"bTotal population increased by 101,816 persons/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Negros Oriental posted a total population of 1,231,904 persons, as of August 1, 2007. This figure represents an increase of 101,816 persons over the total population of 1,130,088 persons in 2000. The annual population growth rate (PGR) recorded in the province for the period 2000 to 2007 was 1.20 percent, lower by 0.91 percentage point from the 2.11 percent annual PGR recorded for the period 1995 to 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"The number of households reached 258,781, or an increase of 31,621 households over the 2000 figure of 227,160 households. The average household size in 2007 was 4.8 persons, lower than the average household size of 5 persons per household computed in 2000/p p align="JUSTIFY"bDumaguete City was the most populous area/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Among the 6 cities and 19 municipalities comprising Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City, the provincial capital, had the biggest population contributing 9.4 percent to the total population of the province. The City of Bayawan ranked second, with a share of 8.9 percent to the total population. This was followed by the cities of Guihulngan (7.4 percent), Tanjay (6.4 percent), and Bais (6.1 percent). The least populated area was the municipality of San Jose, with a share of 1.4 percent to the total population of the province./p p align="center" /p p align="JUSTIFY"bSex ratio increased to 104 males per 100 females/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"In 2007, there were more males (627,657) than females (601,683) in Negros Oriental. These numbers resulted to a sex ratio of 104, which means that there were 104 males per 100 females. In 2000, the sex ratio was recorded at 102./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMedian age rose to 22 years/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Negros Oriental had a median age of 22 years, which means that half of the household population were below 22 years old. In 2000, the median age was 20 years./p p align="JUSTIFY"The proportion of persons under 19 years old to total household population was 46.4 percent. Children aged 10 to 14 years comprised the largest age group with a share of 12.4 percent. Age groups 5 to 9 years (11.7 percent) and 0 to 4 years (11.6 percent) were the next two largest age groups./p p align="JUSTIFY"There were more males than females in age brackets 0 to 59 years while females outnumbered males among those aged 60 years and over./p p align="JUSTIFY"bAlmost 60 percent of the population were of voting age/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Nearly six in every 10 (57.3 percent) household population belonged to the voting-age population (18 years and over). This was higher by 2.5 percentage points compared to the proportion of voting-age population (54.8 percent) recorded in 2000. Of the total voting-age population in 2007, there were more males (50.7 percent) than females (49.3 percent)./p p align="JUSTIFY"bDependency ratio down to 70 dependents per 100 persons of working age/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"The proportion of young dependents (0 to 14 years) to total household population was 35.7 percent, while old dependents (65 years and over) posted a share of 5.5 percent. On the other hand, the working-age population (15 to 64 years) accounted for 58.7 percent of the household population./p p align="JUSTIFY"The overall dependency ratio for Negros Oriental in 2007 was 70. This means that there were about 70 dependents (61 young dependents and 9 old dependents) for every 100 persons of working age. The overall dependency ratio in 2007 was lower than the overall dependency ratio of 76 (68 young dependents and 8 old dependents) in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bHigher number of males than females among never-married persons/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the household population 10 years old and over, 44.4 percent were never-married and 47.1 percent were married. The remaining 8.5 percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, in a common-law/live-in marital arrangement, or had unknown marital status./p p align="JUSTIFY"Males (55.1 percent) outnumbered females (44.9 percent) among those who were never-married. Meanwhile, females outnumbered males in the categories for married, widowed, divorced/separated, and common law/live-in marital arrangement./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMore females than males attended higher levels of education/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the household population five years old and over, 53.3 percent had attended or completed elementary education, 21.7 percent had reached or completed high school, and 5.3 percent were college undergraduates. Academic degree holders accounted for 6.1 percent of the total household population five years old and over./p p align="JUSTIFY"There were more males (52.7 percent) than females (47.3 percent) who had attended or finished elementary. Likewise, more males (50.5 percent) than females (49.5 percent) were college undergraduates. In contrast, females outnumbered males among those who had reached or finished high school (51.8 percent), post secondary (54.3 percent), as well as those with academic degrees (55.6 percent) and post baccalaureate courses (52.3 percent)./p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the total household population 5 to 24 years old, 60.9 percent had attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. There were more males (50.4 percent) than females (49.6 percent) who had attended school during the said school year. School attendance rate was higher among females (63.1 percent of all females aged 5 to 24 years) than among males (58.9 percent of all males aged 5 to 24 years)./p p align="JUSTIFY"bThere were 101 households per 100 occupied housing units/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"In 2007, there were 256,399 occupied housing units in Negros Oriental. This number was 14.0 percent higher than the 2000 figure of 224,815 occupied housing units. There were 101 households for every 100 occupied housing units, or 4.8 persons per occupied housing unit in 2007. In 2000, the ratio of households to occupied housing units was also 101 but there were 5.0 persons per occupied housing unit./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMore than half of occupied housing units had roofs made of strong materials/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"More than half (55.8 percent) of occupied housing units in Negros Oriental had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum, higher than the proportion recorded in 2000 at 40.7 percent. As to the construction materials of the outer walls, 44.7 percent of the occupied housing units had outer walls made of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa.
