· Producer Price Index (PPI) decreases
The Producer Price Index (PPI) for January 2007 dropped by 0.8 percent from its year- ago figure. This was a turn around from the monthly increases observed in 2006. Furniture and fixtures registered the highest decrease in producer price at 14.2 percent. Seven (7) other sectors that posted one-digit decreases were the following: wood and wood products, textiles, leather products, basic metals, petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures and paper and paper products. However, year-on-year increases were observed in eleven (11) major sectors, led by Footwear and Wearing Apparel. Refer to Tables 1 and 1-A.
On a month-on-month basis, PPI inched up by 0.1 percent compared to the previous month's 0.5 percent gain. This was brought about by the price increases in the following major sectors: publishing and printing, transport equipment, non-metallic mineral products, footwear and wearing apparel, chemical products, food manufacturing, electrical machinery and miscellaneous manufacture. However, one-digit decreases were noted in twelve (12) major sectors, led by textiles. Refer to Tables 1 and 1-B.
· Response Rate
The response rate for January 2007 is 80.9 percent, which corresponds to the retrieval of 246 sample establishments' reports. Refer to Table 2.

· Technical Notes
Weights for the PPI are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
