p align="JUSTIFY"bTotal population increased by 9.1 percent/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"The province of Sorsogon had a total population of 709,673 persons as of August 1, 2007, higher by 9.1 percent compared with the census count of 650,535 persons as of May 1, 2000. The increase in population count for the period 2000 to 2007 translated to an annual population growth rate of 1.21 percent./p p align="JUSTIFY"Similarly, the household population of Sorsogon increased by 9.2 percent from 649,411 persons in 2000 to 709,024 persons in 2007. The number of households grew by 14.2 percent, from 125,191 in 2000 to 142,971 in 2007. The average household size in 2007 was 5.0 persons, lower than the average household size of 5.2 persons in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bCity of Sorsogon remained on top in terms of population size/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Among the lone city and 14 municipalities in Sorsogon, the City of Sorsogon, the provincial capital, had the biggest population size in 2007. It accounted for 21.3 percent of the total population of the province. It was followed by the municipalities of Bulan (12.9 percent) and Pilar (9.0 percent). These were also the top three city/municipalities in 2000 in terms of population size. The municipality of Santa Magdalena remained the least populated in both 2000 and 2007 censuses./p p align="center" /p p align="JUSTIFY"bSex ratio was 105 males per 100 females/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the 709,024 household population in 2007, males accounted for 51.1 percent while females comprised 48.9 percent. These figures resulted to a sex ratio of 105 males for every 100 females, lower than the sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females recorded in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMedian age remained at 19 years/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"In 2007, the median age of the household population in the province was 19 years, which means that half of the household population was below 19 years old. The same median age was computed in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"Children aged 0 to 4 years and 5 to 9 years had equal share (13.8 percent each) to household population, followed closely by those in age group 10 to 14 years (13.6 percent). These three age groups comprised 41.1 percent of the household population./p p align="center" /p p align="JUSTIFY"There were more males than females in age groups 0 to 54 years. Females outnumbered males in age groups 55 years and over./p p align="JUSTIFY"bAbout 52 percent were of voting ages/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"The voting-age population (18 years old and over) of Sorsogon was 369,204 in 2007, accounting for 52.1 percent of the household population. In 2000, the voting-age population was 338,087, or 52.1 percent of the household population, the same proportion in 2007. Males (50.5 percent) outnumbered females (49.5 percent) in the total voting-age population in 2007./p p align="JUSTIFY"bDependency ratio ramained at 86 dependents per 100 persons in the working age group/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"More than half (53.7 percent) of the household population belonged to the working-age population (15 to 64 years). Young dependents (under 15 years) comprised 41.1 percent while old dependents (65 years and over) accounted for 5.2 percent./p p align="JUSTIFY"The overall dependency ratio of Sorsogon in 2007 was 86. This means that for every 100 persons in the working-age population, there were 86 dependents (76 young and 10 old dependents). The same ratio was computed in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMore males among never-married persons/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the household population 10 years old and over, 44.9 percent were never married while 43.6 percent were married. The remaining 11.5 percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, had common law/live-in marital arrangement, or had unknown marital status./p p align="JUSTIFY"A higher proportion of males (56.3 percent) than females (43.7 percent) was observed among never-married persons in 2007. Meanwhile, the proportions of females were higher compared to that of males among those married (50.6 percent), widowed (76.3 percent), divorced/separated (58.3 percent), and persons in common law/live-in marital arrangement (51.7 percent)./p p align="JUSTIFY"bFemales had higher levels of education/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"About 46.0 percent of the household population 5 years old and over had attended or completed elementary education, 30.8 percent had reached or finished high school, 4.9 percent were college undergraduates, and 5.4 percent were academic degree holders./p p align="JUSTIFY"Among those with academic degrees, there were more females (58.7 percent) than males (41.3 percent). Similarly, more females (57.2 percent) than males (42.8 percent) pursued post baccalaureate courses./p p align="JUSTIFY"bAbout 70 percent of household population 5 to 24 years old attended school/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Seven out of ten (70.3 percent) of the household population 5 to 24 years old attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. School attendance for males (68.4 percent of all males aged 5 to 24 years) was lower than that for females (72.5 percent of all females aged 5 to 24 years) during the said school year./p p align="JUSTIFY"bOccupied housing units increased by 14.2 percent/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"In 2007, there were 142,141 occupied housing units in Sorsogon. This was 14.2 percent higher than the number of occupied housing units recorded in 2000. A ratio of 101 households per 100 occupied housing units was computed in 2007, the same ratio reported in 2000. Moreover, the number of persons per occupied housing unit was 5.0 persons in 2007, lower than the ratio of 5.2 persons per occupied housing unit in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bOccupied housing units commonly used concrete/brick/stone for the outer walls and cogon/nipa/anahaw for the roofs/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the 142,141 occupied housing units in the province in 2007, the top three construction materials for outer walls were concrete/brick/stone (35.1 percent), bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa (22.1 percent), and wood (20.8 percent). These were also the most commonly used construction materials for outer walls in 2000. Meanwhile, the most commonly used construction materials for the roofs in 2007 were cogon/nipa/anahaw (49.1 percent), galvanized iron/aluminum (44.4 percent), and half-galvanized iron and half concrete (4.0 percent).
