pbPopulation increased to 822,406 persons/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"The population of Davao del Sur (excluding Davao City) was 822,406 persons as of August 1, 2007, based on the 2007 Census of Population (POPCEN 2007). This figure is higher by 63,605 persons over the population count of 758,801 persons in 2000. The population counts for the province from the 2000 and 2007 censuses translated to an average annual population growth rate of 1.12 percent for the period 2000 to 2007./p p align="JUSTIFY"The number of households reached 180,528, which was 23,474 households more than the number of households in 2000. The average household size in 2007 was 4.5 persons, which was slightly lower than the average household size of 4.8 persons in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bCity of Digos was the most populated in the province/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Among one city and 14 municipalities in Davao del Sur (excluding Davao City), City of Digos, the provincial capital, was the most populated with a population of 145,514 persons or 17.7 percent of the provincial total population. This city was followed by the municipalities of Malita (12.9 percent), Santa Cruz (9.3 percent), and Jose Abad Santos (7.6 percent). The municipality of Sarangani (2.5 percent) had the least share./p p align="center"img alt="Figure 1" src="http://census.gov.ph/data/pressrelease/2010/pr1008f1.gif" //p p align="JUSTIFY"bMore males than females/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the 821,324 household population of Davao del Sur, 51.5 percent were males and 48.5 percent were females, which translates into a sex ratio of 106 males for every 100 females. This is slightly higher than the sex ratio of 105 males for every 100 females in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMedian age was 21 years in 2007/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"The household population of Davao del Sur had a median age of 21 years, which means that half of the household population were below 21 years old. This median age is two years higher than the median age of 19 years recorded in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"Persons under 15 years old made up 36.5 percent of the total household population. This proportion was almost equally distributed to age group below 5 years (12.2 percent), 5 to 9 years (12.2 percent), and 10 to 14 years (12.1 percent). There were more males than females in the age brackets 0 to 64 years, while there were more females than males in the age brackets 65 years and over./p p align="center"img alt="Figure 1" src="http://census.gov.ph/data/pressrelease/2010/pr1008f2.gif" //p p align="JUSTIFY"bMore than half of the household population were in voting age group/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"More than half (56.7 percent) of the household population of the province were in the voting age group (18 years old and over). The distribution of voting-age population by sex showed that males (51.6 percent) outnumbered the females (48.4 percent)./p p align="JUSTIFY"bOverall dependency ratio decreased to 68 dependents per 100 persons in the working age group/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"The proportion of household population in the working-age group (15 to 64 years) was 59.6 percent; young dependents (0 to 14 years) comprised 36.5 percent, and old dependents (65 years and over), 4.0 percent./p p align="JUSTIFY"The overall dependency ratio was 68, which means that for every 100 persons in the working age group, there were 68 dependents (61 young dependents and 7 old dependents). In 2000, there were about 75 dependents (69 young dependents and 6 old dependents) for every 100 persons in the working-age population./p p align="JUSTIFY"bThere were more males than females among the never-married/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the household population 10 years old and over in 2007, 46.1 percent were married while 42.3 percent were never-married. The marital status of the rest of the population was either widowed, divorced/separated, common law/live-in, or unknown marital arrangement. Among never-married persons, there were more males (56.3 percent) than females (43.7 percent). Females outnumbered the males in the rest of the categories for marital status./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMore females had higher levels of education/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"Of the household population 5 years old and over, 47.6 percent had attended or finished elementary education and 26.6 percent had reached or completed high school. The proportion of academic-degree holders was 4.8 percent, an increase of 2.7 percentage points from a proportion of 2.1 percent in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"More females had higher levels of education than males as 58.3 percent of those with academic degree were females, and 50.3 percent of those with post baccalaureate course were also females./p p align="JUSTIFY"Among the household population 5 to 24 years old, 55.8 percent attended school at anytime during the School Year 2007 to 2008. Of the total females aged 5 to 24 years, 57.7 percent attended school at anytime during the said school year, while attendance for males was lower at 54.1 percent of the total males aged 5 to 24 years./p p align="JUSTIFY"bRatio of occupants to occupied housing units decreased/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"From a total of 155,327 occupied housing units in 2000, the number of occupied housing units reached 179,568 in 2007, showing an increase of 15.6 percent. The ratio of households to occupied housing units in 2007 was 1.01. The same ratio was recorded in 2000. In terms of the number of persons per occupied housing unit, the ratio in 2007 was 4.6 persons per occupied housing unit, while it was 4.9 persons per occupied housing unit in 2000./p p align="JUSTIFY"bMost occupied housing units were made of strong materials/b/p p align="JUSTIFY"An improvement in the materials used for the outer walls was observed in 2007. The proportion of occupied housing units with outer walls made of concrete/brick/stone increased from 9.2 percent in 2000 to 14.2 percent in 2007. The usage of half concrete/brick/stone and half wood for outer walls also increased, from 12.8 percent in 2000 to 14.4 percent in 2007./p p align="JUSTIFY"The proportion of occupied housing units in 2007 with roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum increased to 58.7 percent from 49.2 percent in 2000. The use of cogon/nipa/anahaw for the roof decreased.
