Total population rose to 298,378 persons

Butuan City registered a total population of 298,378 persons as of August 1, 2007. This count is 31,099 persons more than the total population of 267,279 persons recorded in the 2000 census. The increase in the population count of the city translates into an annual population growth rate of 1.53 percent for the period 2000 to 2007, slightly lower by 0.17 percentage point from the annual population growth rate of 1.70 percent for the period 1995 to 2000.

The number of households rose to 60,755 or an increase of 10,482 households over the 2000 figure of 50,273 households. The average household size decreased from 5.3 persons in 2000 to 4.9 persons in 2007.

 

Barangay Libertad was the largest in terms of population size

Butuan City, a highly urbanized city and the capital of Agusan del Norte, had a total of 86 barangays. Barangay Libertad had the largest population, registering 7.0 percent of the total population of the entire city. Next to this were barangays Doongan with 4.0 percent, San Vicente with 3.9 percent, and Ampayon with 3.7 percent. Barangay Sikatuna Poblacion (Barangay 10) had the lowest population (136 persons).

 

Males outnumbered females

The household population of Butuan City consisted of 150,242 males and 146,632 females, implying a sex ratio of 102 males for every 100 females. In 2000, the sex ratio was 103 males for every 100 females.

Median age was 21 years in 2007

The median age of the household population of Butuan City was recorded at 21 years in 2007. This means that half of the household population of the city were below 21 years old. The median age in 2000 was 19 years.

The proportion of persons under 15 years old to total household population was 36.4 percent. The children 0 to 4 years old comprised the largest age group with 12.5 percent of the total household population.

There were more males than females in the age brackets 0 to 59 years, except in age group 15 to 19 years. On the other hand, in the age brackets 60 and over, there were more females than males.

Voting-age population comprised more than half of the household population

There were 167,730 persons or 56.5 percent of the household population belonging to the voting-age population (aged 18 years and over). This proportion is higher by 2.5 percentage points than the proportion of voting-age population (54.0 percent) reported in 2000. In 2007, the numbers of females and males of voting age were about the same. In 2000, the males of voting age comprised 50.5 percent of the total voting-age population.

Overall dependency ratio down to 68

About 60 percent of the household population belonged to the working-age population (15 to 64 years); 36.4 percent, young dependents (aged 0 to 14 years); and 4.0 percent, old dependents (aged 64 years and over).

The overall dependency ratio of Butuan City in 2007 was 68. This means that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 61 young dependents and seven old dependents. The dependency ratio in 2000 was 74.

About 8 out of 10 females were widowed

In 2007, nearly half (45.7 percent) of the household population 10 years old and over were never-married, while 43.0 percent were married. The rest (11.3 percent) of the household population 10 years old and over were either widowed, divorced/separated, had common-law/live-in arrangement, or had unknown marital status in 2007.

There was a higher proportion of females than males in the different marital status categories, except the never-married. The most noticeable was among widowed with the females making up 77.3 percent of all the widowed.

Females had attained higher levels of education than males

Of the household population five years old and over, one out of three persons (33.5 percent) reached or completed high school education. About 34 percent had either attended or finished elementary education. The proportion of persons who were academic degree holders was 10.7 percent while 9.8 percent had attended but did not complete college.

There were more females than males in the city who were academic degree holders (55.5 percent) and with post baccalaureate courses (58.3 percent).

Among the household population 5 to 24 years old, about three in five persons (64.5 percent) attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. There were more males (50.8 percent) than females (49.2 percent) who attended school during the said school year.

One household per occupied housing unit

A total of 60,755 households resided in 59,510 housing units in Butuan City. These numbers translated to a ratio of 102 households for every 100 occupied housing units. In 2000, the ratio of households to occupied housing units registered at 103 households for every 100 occupied housing units. In 2007, there were 5.0 persons per occupied housing unit while in 2000, there were 5.5 persons per occupied housing unit.

Majority of occupied housing units had roofs made of strong materials

The proportion of occupied housing units with roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum rose from 60.9 percent in 2000 to 67.9 percent in 2007. On the other hand, housing units with roofs made of cogon/nipa/anahaw decreased from 32.6 percent in 2000 to 26.0 percent in 2007. As to construction materials of the outer walls, a large proportion of occupied housing units had outer walls made of wood, as recorded in 2000 (67.8 percent) and 2007 (60.7 percent).
