The total chicken egg production in July to September 2019 was 145.54 thousand metric tons. This was 8.8 percent higher compared with the previous year’s level of 133.72 thousand metric tons.

Relative to their levels  in 2018, 14 regions registered increases in production during the period. The highest increment in production was recorded in Central Luzon, from 26.52 thousand metric tons in 2018 to 30.67 thousand metric tons or an increase of 15.7 percent.

Among the regions, CALABARZON was the top producer of chicken egg at 43.21 thousand metric tons, which accounted for 29.7 percent of the total chicken egg production. This was followed by Central Luzon and Central Visayas with production of 30.67 and 14.0 thousand metric tons, respectively. Collectively, these three regions contributed 60.4 percent to the country’s total chicken egg production. (Table 1)

The adult female inventory of native/ improved chicken on 01 October 2019 was recorded at 22.09 million birds. This went down by 3.2 percent compared with the previous year’s inventory of 22.82 million birds. Meanwhile, laying flock inventory of foreign strain layers went up by 6.3 percent, from 31.80 million birds in 01 October 2018 to 33.81 million birds in 2019. (Table 2)

The average farmgate price of chicken egg in commercial farms in July to September 2019, was quoted at PhP5.16 per piece. It increased by 16.4 percent compared with the average price PhP4.43 per piece in 2018.

During the reference period, the highest farmgate price was recorded in September at PhP5.46 per piece while the lowest was noted in July at PhP4.85 per piece. (Table 3)

TECHNICAL NOTES

This Chicken Egg Situation Report presents the chicken egg industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by type of laying flock and average farmgate price. The report was prepared to serve as ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the volume of chicken egg disposed from locally-raised chicken including those table eggs which were shipped out to other region/province.

Inventory refers to the actual number of chicken layers and native chicken present in the farm as of a specific reference date.

Farmgate price refers to the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm. Thus, the marketing costs such as the transport and other marketing cost (if any) incurred in selling the produce are not included in the farmgate prices.
